Margaret Shepard said “Sometimes your only available transportation is a leap of faith.” Ten years ago I took mine. Left what felt like a lifetime of training in architecture and brought that knowledge + design process into a different medium. No family or friends in the jewelry industry. No experience. No idea what I was doing. Created this job I have and love from scratch, then add some - actually, a lot of - blood, sweat and tears. Had friends become clients and clients become friends, sometimes even chosen family. Paved my way into exhibiting at the best trade shows in the world, won design awards internationally and in the US. New York Fashion Week, Met Gala red carpet, Vogue, WWD, ELLE.
Then on the 10th year this gem of a museum-quality project comes along. What is life, seriously? A girl from a small island in the Caribbean selected as one of 100 women in the world (only Puerto Rican!) and being quoted at a Sotheby’s New York panel discussion by the author, published in a book alongside two real life princesses.
Those who really know me know that all of this doesn’t change me, it never has, never will and I credit my parents for raising me that way. I’m incredibly hard on myself and tomorrow I’ll put my head down and continue to work as hard as ever with an underdog mentality as if all of what I’ve just shared was about a different person.
Not today, though. Today I’m patting myself on the back and embracing it. Celebrating it. So, if you’ve been in any way part of this journey, THANK YOU. I hope you celebrate with me and wear your MB pieces with a little bit more pride. 🤍
It was great to see Linda (author) again and to meet Peggy (book design). Both ladies deserve so much credit for this accomplishment. It was also amazing to meet some of the other women featured in the book.
