I was looking for a Maasai beaded necklace yesterday that I know needs conserving, because is all about beads this week (shoutout to Polly and the bead book display!). Instead of the Maasai necklace, I found this treasure right here- a Kabyle head piece (not headband as stated here) from the Kabylia region in northern Algeria that I got probably 30 years ago in London from (if that is indeed him). Strung up on fiber, it shows pieces of coral, beautiful small lamp worked beads and some bone beads, two silver coins, enameled silver square boxes, and more that I’ll look at in another post. The crazy thing though is that I researched a labbeh from Yemen at the last summer, and they are quite similar in many points. The PRM just published my short blog post I wrote for them on the labbeh, link 🔗 in bio. I’ll compare and contrast in the next posts, and follow me if you want to see me restring the broken bits, and mount it!
