In this week’s newsletter, I talked about spending a week at New Approach School for Jewelers learning more about stone setting, and some of the things I brought home with me.

Including, apparently, a new use for Jolly Ranchers.

Before a group of stones can be set, you first have to figure out exactly where each one will sit. Our instructor, Blaine, showed us a surprisingly simple trick for doing this: lick the candy to get a little of its stickiness onto the surface of the ring, and the tiny stones will stay put just enough that you can move them around and get the spacing right.

For something that requires so much precision, I loved that one of the most useful little tricks involved a piece of candy.

Sometimes the right tool is a graver. Sometimes it’s apparently a Jolly Rancher.

One day, three designers, and so many of you who came out for Objects of Adornment. It was exciting to finally put faces to names, meet so many of you in person, and share new work alongside Rebel Jewelry and Goldstories | Fine jewelry

Thank you to everyone who came through and made it feel like a real celebration of independent jewelry. More to come soon.

Certain forms have a way of following me.

I’ll save an image, photograph an object, or dog ear a page from a book without fully understanding why.
Months later, looking back through everything I’ve collected, the connections begin to reveal themselves.

The Alba ring grew from that process. It continues an exploration that began with the Loma Pendant, drawing on softened architecture, fluted forms, and sculptural volume to create something entirely new.

There are moments when an object seems to become something more than itself.

Perched before a mirror, the Alba ring feels almost transformed. Its curves become grander, the blue chalcedony glows a little brighter, and for a fleeting moment, something small feels almost monumental.

Introducing the Alba ring.

I’ve been drawn to colored cabochons lately: no facets, just an uninterrupted field of color the eye settles into slowly. That’s where this design started.

The soft, fluted bezel recedes gradually, letting each cabochon take center stage. Below it, a substantial and sleek shank visually anchors the piece.

Available in three one-of-a-kind stones: a soft blush pink tourmaline, clear and warm like a wash of watercolor. A periwinkle blue chalcedony, glowing softly from within. A rich, transparent forest green tourmaline, clear enough to see straight through. Now available online at caseyperezjewelry.com

This one took a while to get right. Working out the proportions and sculptural details how I wanted them, sourcing the perfect stones, and developing the setting the way I envisioned it.
Launching Thursday.

Some of the most rewarding parts of this craft are also the most challenging.

I recently spent a week at the Blaine Lewis, Director taking their intensive stone setting course, and it was every bit as rewarding as I’d hoped 💎

The Onda ring has become one of my favorite designs to reinterpret through different gemstones.

This version was made for a client who chose an emerald as the centerpiece. Together, we decided on a bezel setting to give the stone a little more protection while preserving the soft, flowing lines of the design.

I love how much the personality of the ring changes with a different gemstone. The form stays the same, but each version feels entirely its own.

If you’ve been thinking about creating an Onda ring with your favorite stone, my custom books are currently open. I’d love to hear what you’re imagining.
