One of my favorite parts of working with vintage and antique jewelry is figuring out exactly what a piece is. I always start by looking for gold hallmarks, maker’s marks and other clues that can tell us where a piece came from and what it may be made of.

Then comes the science 🧪 — testing the jewelry with an XRF machine to analyze the metal composition and help confirm gold purity.

Most jewelry collectors won’t have an XRF machine sitting at home (understandably 😂), but if you’re buying or selling gold jewelry, proper testing matters. Knowing what you’re selling — and giving your customers confidence in what they’re buying — is everything.

Jewelry really is history + knowledge + science all wrapped into something beautiful. 💎
