Rings with hidden containers like this became known as "poison" rings because they could be used to hold poison or other substances. They became popular in Europe during the 16th century and have been used throughout history to carry perfume, locks of hair, devotional relics, messages, and other keepsakes. It was rumored that Lucrezia Borgia used a ring of this description.
