This antique "poison" ring, featuring a bezel set garnet surrounded by rose cut diamonds, is not only unique in looks, but also in use!

Rings with hidden containers like this became known as "poison" rings because they could be used to hold poison or other substances. They became popular in Europe during the 16th century and have been used throughout history to carry perfume, locks of hair, devotional relics, messages, and other keepsakes. It was rumored that Lucrezia Borgia used a ring of this description.

Now that it's finally October, and Halloween is just around the corner, we will be giving you some hauntingly beautiful inspiration for your Halloween costumes, as well as jewelry ideas for a spine-tingling new look!

With that in mind, we took inspiration from the 1935 film, Mark of the Vampire, and paired these ruby earrings and ruby and diamond bracelet, creating an elegantly timeless vampire look.

Ten carats of faceted, oblong cabochon rubies dangle in diamond pave settings. Rubies = 10.00 carats (tw), diamonds = .49 carats, 14 karat white gold, 1-3/4" L X 1/2" W."

This pair of handcrafted, 18th century Iberian, 18 karat yellow gold earrings are set with deep, purple-red Rhodolite garnets which weigh approximately 3.00 carats (44 total), c. 1750.
