New project. I wanted to a project to show how the sum of simple design changes can add up to a big aesthetic difference. The case, dial design and process is the same. Copper Dial vs Aluminum Dial. Arabic Numerals swapped out for Romans. Spade hands vs Moon. Tan leather vs black. Restored vintage Unitas movement vs the robust Seagull. The Acid dip does use different chemicals but the results are about the same. The dial face is etched away with the acid, leaving the design raised. I blacken the dials with the same chemical treatment. The blackening agent attacks the copper and the aluminum differently. On the Aluminum, we see cooler looking shades of black and gray where the Copper takes on a warmer to***co tone. The copper degrades a little, leaving a decayed looking texture. Then I polish the raised design that looks a lot like applied numerals. Which do you like and if you could change something, what would you do?
