Many of us across Northeast Ohio heard (and some even saw) the meteor that streaked across the sky this morning. The sonic boom rattled homes across several counties and even into neighboring states as the small asteroid broke apart high in the atmosphere. Pretty incredible to witness something like that happening right above northeast Ohio! ✨

Events like this are also a great reminder of something fascinating in the jewelry world—moissanite.

Moissanite was first discovered in 1893 by scientist Henri Moissan while studying fragments from a meteor crater. At first he thought he had discovered tiny diamonds… but the crystals turned out to be an entirely new mineral: silicon carbide.

Today, moissanite is grown in laboratories and has become a fantastic gemstone option for jewelry. It’s known for its exceptional brilliance and fire—meaning it refracts light in a way that often appears even more sparkly than a diamond. It’s also far more affordable, making larger or more elaborate stones accessible without compromising beauty.

Compared to other diamond alternatives, moissanite stands in a class of its own. I typically avoid working with cubic zirconia, which tends to be softer and loses its brilliance over time. On the other hand, lab-grown diamonds are something I strongly support—they’re chemically identical to natural diamonds and another excellent modern option.

The great thing is that most pieces that can hold a faceted stone can be set with moissanite, giving you another beautiful choice when designing a ring, pendant, or custom piece.
