. Most loved quilt.
My most loved quilt is not because of the quilt itself- but of who it represents..
I made this quilt several years ago out of vintage hankies as a memorial quilt in memory of my Oma (German for grandma.) Growing up, my Oma was my idol, my role model. She was kind, loving, generous and just wonderful to be around. She could speak three languages fluently- German, Polish and English. She sewed, had a beautiful flower garden and she was an amazing cook and baker. She was my person. I think my love of creating came from her.
This little quilt features a few images of my Oma that I printed onto fabric and incorporated into the design. As she sewed her entire life, I also included little sewing-themed embellishments within this quilt. Oddly enough, my grandmother didn’t quilt, but she could sew her way around a paper bag. She made everything from clothing to home decor. She even made her wedding dress! 💍👰 She sewed on a vintage black sewing machine that my grandfather bought for her as an anniversary gift in the 1940’s. Well-meaning family members bought her a brand new, modern sewing machine later in life, but she refused to use it. She’d only use the one given to her by the love of her life. I inherited the sewing machine from her after she passed away. Being her favorite grandchild, she wanted me to have it. It still works. ❤️❤️❤️.
My Oma, Maria Josephine Gwizdala, 5/26/1919-7/6/1999. 💕💕💕.
