Silver Boy AKA Seger - A Memorial to Our L'il Man

Silver Boy AKA Seger - A Memorial to Our L'il Man I was a silver and white Maine C**n born at Hopecats Maine C**ns in Henderson, North Carolina in 2024. My name "Seger" means "Victory," "Fighter," "Guardian."

I was a FIGHTER ... I beat the odds at birth to survive, and I have a battle story to share! Marty and Melissa Hodges are the proud adoptive parents of this sweet Silver Boy. We named him Seger after Bob Seger of the Silver Bullet Band because of his silver color, and because Seger means "Victory." This Silver Boy has fought hard to survive, and has made his way into our hearts.

Happy Birthday across the Rainbow Bridge Silver Boy! 🥳🎉

Sweet Seger, you only had 11 days before you would celebrate your second birthday with us. We promised that we would do everything possible to give you a great life, in spite of being born with a hole in your heart. Most wouldn't have made it past birth, but you beat the odds! The doctors at NC State Vet School called you the "Miracle Kitty!"

We promised we wouldn't let you suffer, so when your body couldn't fight any more, we had to let you go. That was one of the hardest days of our lives.

You were my snuggle buddy, my chair mate in my office, my ride mate in the car, my sink buddy in the bathroom. We had such a unique bond. I have cried every day since you've been gone because there are so many things that remind me of you.

Now you can run and play as much as you want, Lil Man, because that hole in your heart is healed. I'm convinced that you took part of my soul with you and will jump into my arms when I get to Heaven. Then we'll both go to meet our Creator!

I love you Seger!
Mama

Our sweet Silver Boy has crossed the rainbow bridge and will no longer be burdened with the hole in his heart. He is playing like the kitten he was and wanted to be. 🐈

It was hard... oh so hard to let him go. We would have given anything to have a way to fix that hole and get him healthy. But he lived the only life he knew and never complained. Now our hearts have a hole, but we can't wait to get to heaven and see him run to us and say thank you for the life he had. I will hold him so tight as I meet my Savior, because I truly believe they have a special spirit that connects to us here. 💙

Thank you, Seger, for being my soul buddy, and for being such a fighter 🥰. My heart will weep until I see you again ❤️

We haven't posted much lately because our beloved Silver Boy hasn't been able to stay as healthy as we wanted. His heart has been working overtime as well as his kidneys, and they just can't keep up anymore 😭.

He's had two appointments at the NC State Vet School this month to assess his condition. The first was to see how his body had responded to a change in meds. Fluids remained, so his meds were increased, but this was overworking his kidneys.

At his appointment today, we learned that he's in full congestive heart failure. There's fluid in his lungs and around his heart. His kidneys are failing. 😭😭😭😭

We have to let him go... our tears have flowed for hours. We have a veterinarian coming tomorrow (6/13) at 11am for in-home euthanasia. This is so hard... 😪😪

This sweet boy has been a fighter... a trooper. He has endured taking meds he didn't like twice a day, but never held a grudge. He has taken trips to the vet that he didn't want to take, but loved us all the more. He has been the best snuggler, the best biscuit maker, the best buddy ... the best soul mate. He hasn't known the regular life of a kitten, but he never complained. He has lived a good life for the lot he was given, and we have been blessed to be his humans.

We will miss you Silver Boy ... more than you could ever know! 💔

😺Hello everyone... I haven't been here for a while because I wasn't feeling the best in the world since my overnight emergency room visit last August. Since then, my mom and dad have been taking me to the Cardiology Department at the NCSU Vet School for routine echocardiograms, heart and lung x-rays, bloodwork, and medicine refills/changes.

Because my parents are taking me to very regular doctor visits, my congestive heart failure has been mostly controlled by switching meds and dosages until they found the right combination. The four meds I have to take twice a day (a diuretic, blood thinner, anticoagulant, and vasodialator), do not taste good (even though my parents try to hide them in lickable treats), so I try to avoid having to take them by hiding. They always seem to find me and make me take them though 🙀. It's not fun, but I don't hold a grudge for very long since they give me special treats afterwards 😻.

My heart is still very large because it works so hard and fast, which doesn't give my lungs much room to expand, so I have to take lots of quick, shallow breaths. The hard work of my heart and breathing muscles uses up more calories than I can take in, so I had lost a lot of weight. I have to eat really small meals often during the day because my enlarged heart pushes against my throat and stomach, keeping me from being able to eat very much at a time.

One big change (that I really didn't like at first) at home is that I have another brother now. He's a kitten 🐈‍⬛, but at 7 months old, he weighs more than me! I tried to show that I was king around here by spraying everywhere (and boy did that make my parents mad), but once he had surgery, I didn't feel threatened anymore and it has actually been fun playing with him. Sometimes Bojangles wants to play too rough and I have to let him know that I'm still boss! 😼

I know financially it's hard on mom and dad (and I miss mom a lot when she's pet sitting to pay for my doctor visits and medicines), but I try to make it up by asking for "uppies" so mom will pick me up and hold me, I make biscuits in her lap, I rub against their legs to say "I love you," and I've been eating better and have gained a little weight back. Mom and dad say I'm worth it, and we have an indescribable bond, even with the struggles. 💝

I love you all! Please share my page and invite your friends to follow my journey 😘

❤️ PLEASE SHARE❤️

There will be many medical needs for our Silver Boy as we help him in his fight to survive. 🫤 We have looked at crowd fundraising options (like GoFundMe), but there are fees that ultimately mean part of the donations are kept by the platform. Even though they show the amount raised, the beneficiary doesn't get the total amount.

If you would like to help in this fight, you can donate cash, check, or send by CashApp to Melissa Hodges, 919-497-6299.
OR

The Vet School gives us an option that allows Silver Boy to get the FULL AMOUNT (no card fees or surcharges) that is donated to him. To make an online donation for Silver Boy directly to NC State Cardiology Department:

From Mom:

Update on our Silver Boy

The stay in the ER Monday night helped Seger tremendously for now. They ran a slow IV of Lasix to pull fluid off his lungs and from around his heart. His heart meds were increased to match the increase in Lasix that he will take from now on. We are monitoring the color of his gums and his respiration rate so we will know when he is struggling again.

It is inevitable that his heart will fail and his lungs will fill with fluid again because it is majorly overworked and enlarged. This hospital visit was over $2k. Of course, we were not expecting this, so financially, we will have to weigh the extent of emergency care we will be able to give in the future vs the quality of life it will give him 😪

For now, Seger is eating and taking his medicines well, his color and breathing remain stable, and his energy is pretty good.

Please continue to pray for us as we make decisions for this sweet boy. We were gifted $500 from a donor fund at the Vet School, which was an awesome blessing 🙌. If you would like to help us as we give this boy the best life possible, you can donate to my number (919-497-6299) through CashApp or donate directly to Seger's account at the NC State Vet School Cardiology Department. The link and instructions will be in the comments of this post.

Thank you for your immeasurable love and support thus far. We are beyond grateful! 🙏❤️

A HUGE prayer request from mom:

I'm posting this video to show how quickly things can change. Yesterday morning, this was Seger, playing and having a great time with Bella. He had an appointment at Wake Veterinary Medical Center to address loss of appetite and he had lost some weight. By the afternoon, he was at NC Vet School Emergency Room in an oxygen chamber with extra doses of Lasix to get the fluid out of his lungs.

He is in congestive heart failure 💔 😭😭

In just one short year, his heart has done almost all it can do. He is staying in the ER to be monitored overnight, but aside from a miracle, this is all that can be done.

These are devastating words to me. I have cried and cried, and my heart aches. Please pray for our little man, and pray for our family as we continue to do what we can to give him the best life possible.... however long that may be 😪

These are in celebration of International Cat Day!

08/08/2025

Mom said that today is International Cat Day and that it's the perfect time to catch my page up. She's been really busy pet-sitting and helping dad care for grandma, so it's been hard to post a lot. I turned one year old in June, and here's my birthday video. More pictures will follow.

I sure do miss my mom when she's away. I roam the house looking for her and I call out for her. But when she gets back, I get lots of snuggles and hugs!
