Keshi pearls are small non-nucleated pearls typically formed as by-products of pearl cultivation. The word keshi comes from keshinomi, the Japanese word for poppy seed, it is used in Japan for all pearls that grew without a nucleus. Today, Keshi pearls are found in all kinds of pearls from Akoya, Tahitian to South Seas.
What makes Keshi pearls valuable?
Keshis are all natural because there is no nucleus inside – meaning the Keshi pearl is completely nacre. Because nacre is a precious material, Keshi pearls are highly prized. Since Keshi pearls usually have an amazing luster to them, their organic shape appeals to designer and pearl lovers. They stand out and catch the eye with their natural shapes and are featured in all different types of jewelry design. Pearl lovers appreciate and value Keshi more than any other pearl. Mixing the organic appeal of Keshi pearls with more classic pearl jewelry designs creates a fresh, fun and very individualized look.
