I also promote the quiet history of ink jet technology that inspired Material Jetting for investment casting in 1989. There should be an Ink Jet Hall of Fame beginning in the late 1950's. All point addressable dot position printing with precision accuracy and dot overlap control allowed for 2D CMYK full color printing in the mid 1980's. This combined with a state of the art hot melt plastic ink inspired one employee to patent a support material process that all 3D printing companies had to follow. None of this was possible without the most advanced acoustic ink jet technology still in use today. Piezoelectric "sound wave" drop generation has benefited high viscosity material Jetting additive manufacturing. People must get tired of my continued discussion about the first real ink jet technology that really works and it has been in a 3D Material Jetting printer longer than any 3D technology. It was actually printing 3D material in 1984. This should amaze everyone. Any questions will be gladly answered by me or they can come to the 3D Ink Jet historical collection in my office building. You don't need a piezo to have a wine glass ring when you rub your finger around the rim. So what is the trigger?
Blow air across an open beer bottle top. What is the trigger?
Blow into a flute. What is the trigger?
What is a trigger?
Please realize the piezo is only a quick responding HAMMER.
IT triggers molecular movement. That is all.
But if you make a diaphram shaped piezo, it will buckle and deflect enough to make a plunger.
Plungers actually move fluid volumes plus trigger molecular motion. This is a dual action piezo. Please keep these two ideas separate. Echo Ink Jets only use the hammer or trigger technology. Only one 3D printer company is using Echo jets. It is single nozzle printhead technology.

What does hold voltage mean?
What does Fire voltage mean?
These terms are for inkjets.
Inkjets are simple devices. There is a straight pipe of fluid. There is a sleeve like tube on the pipe called a piezo electric trandsucer. Voltage applied to a piezo changes its shape. The Hold voltage is applied to hold the piezo in a known shape. The hold voltage is about 100 volts dc.
Removing part of the voltage to about 50 volts will activate the jet. Activation is called Fire.
There are no real fires but the fluid knows what to do during activation. The fluid does not flow. But each Fire gives one drop. This is called Drop on Demand inkjet technology. After Fire the piezo returns to normal shape with the Hold voltage at 100 volts. It is now ready to activate again. It can do this up to 16,000 times per second. The behavior of the fluid is a trade secret.
