What Language Do I Speak in Morocco?

I spent 2 months refreshing my French. I had taken it in college but I am much better with Spanish. Morocco is very close to Spain and it’s true many Northerners speak Spanish but other than Tangier it isn’t spoken much. French is Morocco‘a second language and they are taught it starting in 2nd grade but that doesn’t mean everyone remembers how to speak French. In fact most people I encountered were like me and spoke only a few words. They also mostly speak only a few words of English which they take starting in 9th grade. What they speak and prefer you learn to communicate with them is Moroccan Arabic which is a mixture of Berber and Arabic! So even if I attempted to learn Arabic it would not be as useful.
So what do I speak? I greet in Arabic. I then try some French mixed with some Spanish and then resort to English.
And then I get out Google Translate and end with saying “Shakram” and pat my heart.
Love and gratitude is universal….

The Winter Solstice is my favorite day of the year. The most hours available to star gaze. The most hours available to lay under covers snuggled in darkness. The most your Christmas lights can sparkle.
I once hiked rim to rim in the Grand Canyon on the Winter Solstice. I love hibernation. I believe I need this time to rejuvenate. To contemplate new beginnings. This year on my 60th year in earth my bones and joints need the rest.
When I lived in Las Vegas my friends would greet the day after hiking to top of a mountain. I never did. I wouldn’t want to waste the long morning by being awake because I’d usually stayed up so late the night before looking at the stars by the fire I’d built in our backyard.
Unlike the longest day with its harsh summer sun, and it’s seemingly never ending drama today is subtle and can end before the drama begins.
I have experienced this day in England, when the sun is gone by 3:30 pm. Happy hours are legit at 2:30.
I love this day! Happy Winter Solstice. Cheers.
