Some of our earrings feature really unusual plants that we gather over the year. This pair is made from bloodroot leaves (Sanguinaria canadensis) which is a spring ephemeral native to Michigan. It gets its name from the red sap that comes out of all parts of the plant, but particularly the root. You'll see them emerge in early spring with these unique shaped leaves and pretty little white flowers!

This is the only pair I made because sadly, the ecosystems that they thrive in are becoming less common due to urbanization, invasive species, pollution, and more. It's important to talk about native plants like these so we can have greater awareness and consider how our society's actions can impact their future.

Earlier this year, we had the chance to road trip through California and one of our favorite stops was in Big Sur. When I tell you that we had one of the dreamiest and most perfect hikes ever, I'm not kidding - we hiked up a large open hill before trekking through a coastal redwood forest, and then back down across switchbacks running through the costal bluffs. Near the end of the hike, the trail dumped us out on a secluded beach where we spent nearly an hour enjoying the ocean and wildlife all on our own. It was STUNNING and also so precious to be able to cherish and revere where the land met the ocean. These earrings are inspired by that experience and feature seaweed we gathered from a beach on the Pacific Ocean. I loved them so much, I kept a pair for myself :)

These particular earrings in the photos are no longer available, but I will have a few more at our upcoming sale next Saturday from 4-9pm at the !

I've made plenty of bone jewelry from owl pellets found in the forests of Michigan, but I now have several pieces made from those found in my grandmother's yard in California! She lives on the outer-edge of San Diego County, and has housed a family of barn owls for several years in the tall owl box overlooking the mountains. This fall, I had a chance to visit her and share more about my work with Tåno Studio. Together, we gathered some of the pellets, and I brought them back to Michigan to create jewelry. I was super excited to find some huge rodent bones in them - much larger than the ones from Michigan! 🖤🦉

I Taotao Tåno. I may be a child of the diaspora but I'm proud to descend from the CHamoru people! My father was raised in Guåhan (Guam) and like so many Pacific Islanders, he moved to California when he was just a young man. As a child, I used to relish and even envy his stories of growing up on the island among the beautiful terrain and beaches, immersed in CHamoru culture. While I didn't have those same experiences growing up stateside, I'm grateful to have been raised in a region that has one of the largest CHamoru communities outside of Guåhan. I was also lucky to have been surrounded by a large CHamoru family, one that partook in CHamoru culture in our own special way. These latte stone earrings are my diasporic take on a cultural symbol because they feature plants native to the lands I'm currently living on - the lands of the Anishinaabeg.

The northern sea oats are a type of grass that can be found across the central and eastern U.S. and are beneficial to our ecosystems by providing food and shelter for many organisms. I think they're a beautiful testament to the harmony among the living things here and I'm grateful that I can honor and cherish this land as my ancestors did with the land of Guåhan.

Sharing another custom order that I was able to do earlier this summer! I had someone reach out about doing a gingko jewelry set, and surprisingly, I had never worked with gingko leaves before! Lucky for us, they shared the location of some trees alongside a road in REO Town, and we did some urban foraging alongside busy traffic lol. Even though this picture is right before I finalized the pieces, it still shows the unique design that we came up with. I love that we used slightly yellow leaves, so once everything was made, they gave a gorgeous gold hue in the light. 🔆

When I have the time and capacity, I love to make custom orders for folks! A friend reached out about creating a jewelry set that incorporated her gorgeous sea glass finds with natural elements like bones. I'm totally OBSESSED with these hoop earrings and choker necklace that include real vertebrae from a squirrel. I love how unique they are but also super special to her! 🖤Would you wear vertebrae jewelry? 👀

We've posted about our owl pellet finds before but if you're new, we love making jewelry out of the bones we find in them! Owl pellets are the balls of indigestible materials that owls cough up after swallowing prey whole. Quite often, the indigestible materials are the bones and fur of small rodents. You may have even dissected pellets as a child in class because pellet contents can actually teach us a lot about owl diets as well as the overall state of the ecosystem! 🦉

While we have found owl pellets in the forests before, our most recent pellets were actually given to us by a former customer as they had several owls nesting in their backyard 🖤 We are SO grateful for customers that share fun finds with us and then we have the opportunity to make beautiful creations with them! This pair is sold but we plan to have more at our next sale in October!

Ironweed is a beautiful perennial wildflower native to southern Michigan. We love it's magenta purple blossom, and it's always such a joy to find it in a low prairie or near marshes. Plus, it's a major food source for a number of pollinators like long-tongued bees and skippers, and is a host plant for the Parthenice Tiger Moth (look him up, he's beautiful!)

I try to only harvest a handful of certain wildflowers throughout the year to save as much as possible for pollinators. 🐝 Ironweed is one of my favorite kinds of flowers to turn into jewelry and while this pair is no longer available, I'll have just a few pairs at my next sale in October :)

Raccoons have long called Michigan home, and serve an important role in our native ecosystems. 🖤

Known for their cleverness and adaptability, they can sometimes get a bad rap for being mischievous and wreaking havoc. But it's these same traits that make them so important! They naturally help distribute the seeds of the berries and nuts they eat, feast on small rodents and insects, and eat the remains of dead animals. All in all, they keep areas clean and help to keep pest populations in check. 🦝

This necklace was made from the jaw of a younger raccoon found out in the forests of Michigan. While this exact necklace sold at our last event, we hope to make more with the next jaw bones we find.

Soooo we know "mushroom jewelry" doesn't sound the coolest, but doesn't this necklace look really cool? We forage all kinds of mushrooms throughout the year like this invasive golden oyster mushroom shown here. Aside from foraging mushrooms for eating, we also preserve a select few for jewlery! We're planning to bring some fun earrings and necklaces made from golden oysters, turkey tail, and other fungi this Saturday. Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!
