Here are some red flags to look out for when you are shopping for preserved animal specimens to help ensure you are purchasing a more ethically sourced specimen!

If the seller has the ability to sell mass quantities of cheap foreign frog, snake, or juvenile crocodilian specimens, that’s a red flag pointing to commercial culling rather than ethical collection.

Intentionally vague labels like "real jellyfish" or "blue snake" prevent you from knowing the exact species of the specimen, and that keeps you from being able to check protection status.

Poor preservation or rotting tissues indicate a rushed, disrespectful, and cheap operation. Look for clear preservation liquid. Murky, reddish, or dark liquid and floating/slipping tissue are all signs of improper formalin-fixation or decomposition. Ensure the specimen was properly formalin fixed before purchasing, AND CHECK REVIEW PHOTOS!

A reputable seller should be able to explicitly state the origin of the species they are selling. Anyone who responds to detailed sourcing questions with phrases like "ethically sourced, don't worry" is a major red flag.

Certain animals are almost impossible to source ethically. The majority of dried or pinned bat specimens are unethically harvested, despite the claims of "natural death" or "ethical bat farming". If a seller has bats, it’s an automatic red flag.

Keith dropped an amazing video about the striking similarities between the way Irish and Mexican cultures honor the d€ad.

There is far more to it than I can stitch here, so I urge you to check out the full video from Keith

I love finding cool, historical info about this special time of year!
