Can you fall in love with a gemstone?
Yes, you can! It’s not about prestige or investment value. It’s about beauty and what it represents. It could be a special color, or shape, its origin, or an occasion to remember. There are so many reasons people connect to a gemstone. But all of them are personal.
Last November I found a gorgeous purple sapphire while I was working at the Houston Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show. This deep royal purple stone had an unusual color that made it special. It was also an unheated stone (98% of sapphires undergo heat treatment). In addition, it had been cut by a master gem cutter (Tucson Todd) so it’s sparkle and fire were beyond incredible! Flashes of pink, blue, red, and purple with every movement. The pictures below don’t come anywhere close to showing what it looked like in person! These were the reasons I purchased it.
The next day, while I was at home, Todd contacted me. Apparently another woman had seen the stone the day before as well. She couldn’t get it out of her head. She went back to get it…but it was gone. He tried finding another stone for her, but her heart was set on that one. Would I…could I, consider selling it?
I meet with her a couple of days later. She was so excited! For her, it was the perfect stone to put into a piece of remembrance jewelry. It had a deep meaning for her. She told me she had cried on the way home thinking she had lost it by waiting…until she heard I would pass it on. She’d been dancing ever since!
Although I was a bit sad I wouldn’t get to work with it, I get to see Todd again in February (during the Tucson Gem show). I know he’ll have other stones I’ll be happy to buy! But, this stone….it found the home it was intended to have.
