Founded by artist Kate Doody, Piper Laine Studio creates elegant porcelain jewelry cast from treasures found on the beaches of Cape Cod. Kate has found inspiration from her everyday experiences and sought to bring them to life in her series entitled: “Maggie’s Shells”. Taking its name from the famed E.E. Cummings poem: “maggie and milly and molly and may”, Kate sentimentally connects this work to the nostalgia in both the poem and her childhood experiences of exploring the New England shorelines while vacationing with her family. Now that she lives here in Brewster with her own children, she is fortunate to regularly partake in this ritual familiar to most anyone who visits the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod. She combs the beach to discover unique treasures, washed and weathered by sun, wind, water and sand. A gift from the ocean, each distinct shell represents a moment in time and a memory of our shared experiences re-discovering ourselves in the relics of the sea.
Kate’s collection of shells are carefully curated and a preferred few are cast in fine porcelain. Each shell is meticulously refined by hand and transformed by heat to give it strength and to adhere the precious 22 karat gold luster. Pieces are completed using all high quality sterling silver or 14 karat gold filled components, creating sophisticated jewelry. Elegant enough for special occasions yet familiar enough for everyday, Kate hopes you will enjoy wearing “Maggie’s Shells” and maybe even carry within them your own memories of time spend on Cape Cod.
