New rings coming soon to the site 🪄
Antique diamond set into 18k yellow fairmined gold, with the most delicious melee morsels set into the shoulders. I love finding the diamonds with the most character. Sure, we have our classic round old Europeans in the collections (you can’t go wrong), but when the hunt for something unusual concludes with something like this I am that much more excited to get in the studio.
A small collection of diamond rings and new wedding bands will be coming soon to the site, for now you can find these in person at .cochineal. Feel free to email with any questions đź’Ž

Baskets and bezels! Inspired by my gemologist grandmother’s gem collection that I inherited, they’ve become a real staple in my collection. Each is fabricated entirely from scratch, the old school way.
Mother’s Day is this weekend. Birthstones are a clear winner for a gift for mom, but I also think just a simple trip to freestone is a gift and experience all in and of itself. We have the bakery, the flower farm, for the most peaceful massage you’ve ever had (get the pagoda!), for wine tasting, and finally, Cochineal. Oysters in bodega are right down the road (we love !), and the quaint town of Occidental is a hop skip and a jump (looking at you , and ). We are as much here for inspiration, conversation, and community as we are for selling jewelry. That’s what I love about having a brick and mortar in such a beautiful place 💛 come visit us in west Sonoma county!

Just before leaving for Japan I dropped a large new collection of one of a kinds including this suite of engraved pendants. Right now in my engraving practice, everything is a study. I pour over reference books I have been collecting over the years of various ornamental designs through history and cultures - European textile designs, ancient Egyptian columns, the composition of Japanese woodblocks, ancient and Victorian jewelry of europe, mid century forms and furniture, folk art, and my favorite and maybe most influential at the moment - the art and tattoos of The Picts, a confederation of indigenous Iron Age Celtic tribes in northern and eastern Scotland (swipe to last image to see an example). I intentionally let these influences seep into my design brain, filing them away til they come out onto the metal when I’m at the bench. I rarely reference the images directly when I’m laying out the design, I just let my memory paint the patterns through my minds eye and memory. These pendants are real talismans, imbued with strong yet ambiguous symbolism through pattern and shape. Each one is a power piece to wear close to your heart 🧿

New bridal available in store and online. I played with the silhouette of our ever popular horseshoe band for these beauties, and added some milgrain and pavé work to top them off. Our bench jeweler, Yarrow () , has been putting her newly honed pave skills to good use on these rings. Our friend and master stone setter has been graciously teaching Yarrow some incredible stone-setting skills over the last year, spending time with her in his studio with the sole intent of passing down knowledge he has learned over decades of being a jeweler. That paired with my ventures in engraving, It’s been really fun developing designs based on both of our progressing skill sets. We have wonderfully complimentary skills and interests when it comes to bench work, and these rings are a good marker of development in both my style and our capabilities.
The top stone is an antique carre cut, the middle a beautiful petite old European cut, and the bottom a Canadian mined portrait cut diamond. I love this little suite of rings and am excited to bring more bridal to the table this year đź’Ž

Rare to share a photo of me, let alone one of me outside my studio. Hello everyone! This is me and one of my many animals, Pete, at the beach in Northern California where I hail from. I just celebrated Ten years since I learned the craft of metalsmithing while living in the high desert of central Mexico. These days I own a fine jewelry boutique - .cochineal, in tandem with creating my own work that I sell through ~20 retailers across the country. At Cochineal, you can find my full collection along with work from over 30 artists. Thanks for following along and witnessing the progression of my work over the last decade ♥️

I had this grouping of five stones together on one of my many “pieces in process” trays at my wax carving bench for quite some time - a year and a half at least. Combining geometric stones like this is not something I have done often in my work, but I kept coming back to this arrangement over and over again. I always had a cigar band vision in mind, but it wasn’t til I started practicing engraving that I knew I had to break this combo out to put into use. So far, with engraving, I haven’t started pieces by sketching on paper much. This one rolled off the hand with some wiggly sharpie marks I traced in excitement onto the metal under the scope. The negative space around the stones came out as a sort of folk-y flower shape as I traced the area how I saw it in my mind, and it wasn’t until I photographed the finished ring that I realized the triangular diamond served as a sort of bloom to top it off. A happy accident.
I like working like this, without a strict plan, because I feel a little bit of freedom in designing in the moment. For me the magic happens when I’m with the materials and ready to go, sensing my intuition come into play as I look through the scope and at my pile of sharpened gravers conveniently living at the right edge of my bench. If I feel an urge to start putting certain lines down I just want to do it right away, rather than draw it, map it, transfer it, etc. maybe it’s impatience but I’d like to think that intuition is fleeting and if I don’t capture it in the metal right away it’s impression will fade. I do, however, use brass practice plates that are always kicking around my bench, easily accessible so I can “jot something down” when I have an idea. I do reference them a fair amount when I’m picking a pattern to graver to use.
This is one of my favorite rings available at the moment, and I know that it will call to someone special. Vintage and reclaimed diamonds, 18k yellow gold, can be resized.

Happy Thanksgiving from the whole team here at Cochineal and Erin Cuff Jewelry! When I took the leap to open the shop I was worried that it would be hard to build community in such a tiny town. Thanks to every person who has made a purchase big or small, you keep us going! We couldn’t be happier being in our magical corner of the world curating beautiful things for you made by artists near and far.
Our little freestone shop is closed today but we will be back open tomorrow for regular hours, 10:30-5!
P.S. - speaking of community, come join us for our annual holiday soirée on December 6th from 4-7! and will be set up all day taking portraits and piercing ears. DM them to book an appointment and come raise a glass of bubbly with us!
