Rock Chick Designs Musically inspired creative reuse in Humboldt County, Calif.

We create musically inspired jewelry and accessories out of mostly repurposed/upcycled items, from glass liquor bottles turned into beads in our Henderson Center, Eureka glass studio to salvaged copper electrical wire, instrument strings to cassette tape, records to record jackets. When you buy from Rock Chick Designs, you're helping keep these items from either ending up in a landfill or collecting dust for eternity in the back of someone's garage.

Rock Chick Designs is coming into our Arcata era this coming month — Arcata Friday Night Market for the next 3 weeks, followed by North Country Fair next month.

This week, we're excited to debut a small collection of our designs that you're used to seeing on salvaged copper electrical wire, but on (silver tone) aluminum electrical wire, instead! They're shockingly lightweight, and some of the less saturated colors (like Fire and Light copper) are more visible. Can't wait to see what y'all think.

Today, we visited the Bayside and Sunnybrae neighborhood yard sales, and while we picked up some real treats, the icing on the cake was the bag of used fiddle strings that were once played by the late, great Brooks Otis (I'll share a link you can copy-paste into a browser — a beautiful and fitting memorial post about Brooks from Patrick Cleary Patrick Cleary, written in May of this year). I did NOT buy them... the price on the package is how much Brooks paid for them.

Rock Chick Designs started in 2007, turning used and broken guitar strings into bracelets. Over the years, I have received well loved old guitar strings from many friends in bands, as well as DJs at KHSU, when I (Monica) worked there for 10+ years. I didn't work with strings for many years, but had a hard time saying no when folks asked if I still wanted them. I treasure them and appreciate knowing I cross people's minds, still, when they change their strings or break a string.

I started using guitar strings in my jewelry once again, last season, and am thrilled to have merged one of my retro media into current creations.

Back to today... we were in Sunnybrae for yard sales (park the car at one and walk to a bunch more), and my friend Claire Hashem Claire Hashem drives by and hollers at me — we've been trying to meet up for more than a month, but here we were in her neighborhood! She asked her mom to pull the bag of strings out for me, and reminded me of her address. Robot and I landed at Claire and Robin's rhashemACV place for a hug, a great catch-up conversation...and a bag of Brooks Otis's fiddle strings.

And while we're stoked about other thrift and free pile scores, these strings warm my entire heart. I'll create with them, and honor Brooks.

Behold this slightly disappointing (but manageable) experiment — I can't remember who passed along a set of old glass stop light lenses to us a handful of years back, but I had motivation to test the red and see if it would keep its color in the torch. The answer is... sort of? The glass, in the torch, is very viscous and doesn't want to go fully molten. The glass rods turned out uneven, but still red!

The beads made from those rods are more of a *burnt* red, for lack of a better way to describe them. Odd, but I'll make them work and keep experimenting with that glass.

This Saturday at the Moose Lodge in Cutten, the Moose on the Loose classic car show will include a silent auction donation from Rock Chick Designs. Want to guess the materials it'll be made from? 😉

The event benefits Hospice of Humboldt, which now holds a spot deep in my heart, thanks to their care for our dear friend Jeanie in her final months.

Getting ready for tonight's 2nd-to-last Eureka Friday Night Market Humboldt Made Friday Night Market | Eureka + Arcata, in our spot on 2nd Street between E and F, closest to our friends at Booklegger Booklegger_Eureka.

We love our local artisan manufacturers, like Lost Coast Brewery Lost Coast Brewery, It's Alive kombucha It's Alive Kombucha, (not pictured) Septentrio Winery Septentrio Cellars, Alchemy Distillery Alchemy Distillery, and Fire & Light Originals glassware. You'll find a little something from all of these at our table this evening.

Hope to see you at the Market between 5:30 and 8:30pm.
