Musically inspired creative reuse in Humboldt County, Calif.

We create musically inspired jewelry and accessories out of mostly repurposed/upcycled items, from glass liquor bottles turned into beads in our Henderson Center, Eureka glass studio to salvaged copper electrical wire, instrument strings to cassette tape, records to record jackets. When you buy from Rock Chick Designs, you're helping keep these items from either ending up in a landfill or collecting dust for eternity in the back of someone's garage.

I stopped by the near future home of the Ink People (my day job) after work, and ran into the contractor, who walked me through the current progress, as I baraged him with 1,000 questions about the history of the building, and "what were they thinking"s.

He mentioned that as the workers were clearing out the attic, they came across two odd things:
1) A half-drunk bottle of Stolichnaya vodka, next to a chair, under one of the SKYLIGHTS... yes, the old Club West has skylights above the vintage lath and plaster drop-ceiling, but I digress. Did I ask for the bottle, for bead purposes? Absolutely.
2) Multiple bags of plastic "yard"-style cups with Club West branding.

Anyway... I also grabbed more electrical wire pulled out of the building for earring frames and such.

Salvaged materials with a well-storied history.

How are YOU procraftinating, this evening?

I'm getting ready to launch registration, but got my hands on a wire stripping machine for , so... a creative break was taken.

Fun fact: The pictured wire was pulled out of the old Club West a.k.a. new building during renovations, last week.

Show of hands 👐 if you spent a good part of your mid-to-late teens in the building at 535 5th Street, watching punk, ska, and neo-swing shows, and sneaking into Club Triangle 🏳️‍🌈 dance nights, back in the 1900s. ✋️✋️

Who has two stumpy thumbs and is pretty excited for this evening's Galentine's Market in Fortuna? This lady!

Today (Friday, February 13th) from 6-9pm at the Fortuna Veteran's Hall, 1426 Main Street. There is a $5 entry fee that supports the Fortuna Girls Wrestling Team, and a fun variety of vendors for all of your Galentine's needs (wants).

We'll have new "Doodle" heart earrings, small and medium Ambrosia earrings, and a bunch of your tried and true favorites, as well.

We're excited to wrap up our vending season with one more event: Galentine's Market, this Friday, Feb. 13th, from 6-9pm at the Fortuna Veterans Hall. There is a $5/ person entry fee, and you can either buy a ticket in advance by clicking through , or pay at the door. I imagine the line will be shorter and move more quickly for those who purchase their ticket ahead of time.

There will be a fantastic variety of vendors at this event, so get it on your schedule for the end of the week. Oh, also, rainbow 🌈 Doodle Heart earrings?? How about that for the tail end of our season? 😁

*Honored* is an understatement. Tomorrow evening, we'll be setting up our creations alongside and , for an evening that both celebrates Christina's 20 (official) years of bringing sparkle to our community, and raises funds for .

Back in September, we had a home inspection done by , prior to buying our house. Back in the detached building, Robot popped open a hatch to the crawl space above the garage (a converted cannabis grow) and spotted these empty (CHEAP) wine bottles. He sent me a photo, and I thought to myself, "If this — Rock Chick Designs art supplies — isn’t a sign this place is supposed to be ours, I don't know what is."

Of course, we got the keys in October, the Rock Chick Designs studio is my favorite work-in-progress, and Robot pulled the wine bottles down today. Must be time to get the bead torch set up...
