Burnt Village didn't survive the shutdown fortunately others did. Anyone who bought or looked at chainmail, including the much coveted Ti chainmail, this was the source of that and more items.

Never forget, that on this day in 793AD, a group of brave Norsemen selflessly rescued the treasures of Lindisfarne from a great fire, after the monks mysteriously and spontaneously died.

Hey a little news flash for all my throwing sports peeps.

For years my #1 recommended throwing weapons have been from Cold Steel Knives, well in December the founder of Cold Steel, Lynn Thompson, sold the company to Texas based GSM Outdoors. Speculation is this was at least partially do to Cold Steel's having ever increasing difficulty keeping their entire line of products in stock at any given time. At the moment at least it doesn't appear that GSM is having any great success at keeping the Cold Steel line of throwing weapons in stock as virtually everything is out of stock.

However there is some good news, from what I've read when he sold the company Lynn Thompson retained the right to produce some of the Cold Steel lines including spears, Lynn's new venture is called Never Unarmed. Both the Assagi (best throwing spear ever IMHO) and Boar Spear style spearheads plus the entire line of MMA spears which Cold Steel introduced a couple years ago but rarely had in stock, are now available under Lynn's new brand Never Unarmed.

Note: I'll keep watching the throwing axe/knife situation which at the moment is not good. Cold Steel currently has virtually nothing in stock either on their website or through distributors and Never Unarmed as not yet add any throwing specific products to their line. Hopefully one or both will decide that the throwing market is large enough to garner the kind of attention necessary to keep those products in stock.

Seriously Discover Magazine? Just how much credibility do you think you have when your "vikings" article features a guy in a horned helmet and a cloak make of animal skins?

Second there will never be "evidence" of Norse exploration or settlement in North America as long as the academically safe answer is to declare every new find or discovery a hoax. For centuries every time there was a possible discovery of evidence of Europeans in North America prior to Columbus the virtually immediate response of academia was to declare it a "hoax" even if the "hoax" had to be decades in the making and relied on a long string of happenstance to bring the hoax to fruition.

Declaring something a hoax requires no evidence, the expert who declares something a hoax doesn't have to prove who or how the hoax was perpetrated. Further declaring something a hoax carries virtually zero professional risk, once labeled a hoax examination by the accredited experts in the field stops, with only amateurs or those with "fringe theories" continuing to examine the find. Of course anything discovered by amateurs or fringe theorists is immediately dismissed because the "foremost experts in the field" have already declared the find a hoax.

The list of Vikings in America hoaxes is nearly endless, filling entire books, because aside from L’Anse aux Meadows every piece of evidence has been declared a hoax or "inconclusive". If Norse Sagas were given even 10% of the credibility which academia grants to Native American folklore, virtually every one of the finds that were declared a hoax or inconclusive would be presented as absolute proof of the credibility of Norse Sagas.

Centuries before Columbus, a small band of Norse people explored the Canadian coast. For now, the only proof is a single settlement. Here’s what’s known about how the Vikings came to North America, where they landed and why they left.

We get a lot of questions about how to put on winningas (aka Viking leg wraps), this guy really does do a good job of not just showing how its done but also how to fix the most common problem people have with applying or wearing a pair winningas. Plus the proper way to finish or tie them to ensure that they stay up virtually all day.

Hello everyone, here is a short guide to how to put on your Winningas for your early medieval and dark age impressions. In this video we will cover some grea...

An interesting critique of re-enacting as a whole. The author is talking about European re-enactment in particular but his criticisms could as easily be applied to most medieval re-enactment in the USA as well.

The author is certainly right about the authenticity and education aspects, and there should be no argument that re-enactment can be done with an extremely high level of authenticity, look at the various war re-enactment groups, most of them do an orders of magnitude better job of recreating the times, places and events which they purport to be re-enacting than virtually any of the Medieval period re-enacting groups.

I suspect that a significant amount the problem with attempts to push for authenticity in Medieval re-enacting is it requires one to focus on a rather limited time and place, which is far too exclusionary for modern PC thinking. To accurately recreate the Roman, Viking, Crusades or Renaissance eras of European history, or the Japanese Sh**un or Chinese Dynasty periods of Asia history is to exclude the 70-85% of the world that people living in that time/place didn't interact with and the 90-95% of human civilization that occurred either before or after. This is why war re-enactors and buckskinner rendezvous do it better than other groups, they focus on a very specific time and place. I suspect that with the exception of small groups willing to accept scorn and accusations of racism by the PC crowd we will never see authentic recreating being done in either Europe or America.

Various ‘historical festivals’ are spreading across Europe like wildfire. They seem to be spreading from the north to the south with the medieval festival/market/experience being the most common cu…
