🚨New Bracelet Alert 🚨

Introducing our CHUNKY MORSE CODE bracelet. This one is made especially for our larger wrist crew.

Hand strung with genuine black onyx and black stainless steel. We kicked the bead size way up and used chunky 10mm and 6mm beads. It looks like a classic black stone bracelet to everyone else. But we know what it says.

We get requests for larger sizes all the time, so this design was created specifically with larger wrists in mind, starting at our size Large (7.25” wrists) and up.

Classy enough for dinner. Petty enough for democracy.

I cannot stop thinking about Pierre Damas Bel and the similarities to my son. He was only 20 years old. He was recently graduated from High School and had just started studying neuroscience at Wright State. He had hopes and dreams.

And I keep thinking about how easily their circumstances could have been reversed. Neither one of them chose where they were born. My son happened to be born here. Pierre happened to be born in Haiti. That’s it. And he was treated like a criminal simply because of where he was born. He wasn’t someone we needed protection from. He was a young man trying to build a life. He wasn’t even old enough to buy a b**r. His father said he felt like he was being treated like an animal.

Now he’s dead and I am disgusted that we have gotten to a place where treating immigrants like criminals is somehow normal. Where humiliating them and ripping them from their families is celebrated. These are our neighbors.

Before he died Pierre wrote about the humiliation of walking around with an ankle monitor and asked how he was supposed to play college sports while wearing it.

And I’m tired of the bu****it narrative that this is about getting dangerous criminals off our streets. If this was about violent criminals, Pierre would never have been wearing that ankle monitor in the first place. The vast majority of people being targeted are not criminals. Yet we keep hearing degrading language until people start believing that the immigrant family living down the street is somehow a threat to them.

Pierre wasn’t a threat to anyone. He was an honors student who played soccer. He came here legally, had immigration protections and an active asylum case. Then the rules changed around him and suddenly this kid was walking onto a college campus with a monitor strapped to his ankle.

Pierre should be worrying about classes and what he’s doing this weekend. Instead, his family is burying him. There is nothing normal about this. And I refuse to pretend any of it is okay.

‼️‼️ A note about an incident our page experienced yesterday ‼️‼️

Yesterday, someone spent hours posting screenshots from public record websites across dozens of our posts in an attempt to dox us. The comments remained up overnight before we saw them, and we’ve since removed them, blocked the account and reported the harassment. If you see any we’ve missed, please let us know.

Since some customers have seen those comments, we’d rather address them directly than let misinformation do the talking. The biggest lie was that our family are “registered Republicans.” Ohio doesn’t register voters by political party. Primary ballot history is public information, which is what this person is referring to, but it doesn’t tell the whole story about a person’s beliefs or values. We regularly vote Republican in primary’s to pick the lesser evil conservative candidate, and go on to vote Democrat in the general. This is a regular occurrence for many Ohio families.

Like many families, ours has evolved politically over the years. Some of our family members, including one of the Fem5 (the 5 of us who actively participate in FemMercantile), voted Republican in the past, although voting Republican does not mean they voted for Trump. Others have always been unapologetically progressive. Over the last 2 decades our family’s views have changed significantly. We also want to be clear that we don’t believe being a Republican automatically makes someone our enemy. Many people are simply fiscally conservative, care deeply about their communities, and want a government that spends responsibly while also being socially progressive. Those people are welcome here. We believe it’s possible to disagree on tax policy or the size of government while still standing together for democracy, human dignity, equal rights and respect for one another.

Another rumor claimed that “FemMercantile” means we are a Woman owned business, it doesn’t. The name has always stood for Feminine Mercantile. We specialize in delicate, traditionally feminine jewelry paired with bold, unapologetic messages. Feminine doesn’t mean exclusively for Females and that fact speaks for itself. That’s just our brand. It has never been a statement about who is allowed to shop with us. We’re a family business, and almost every member of our family of 5 contributes in different ways.

We can handle criticism. We can even appreciate a well crafted roast. We even love the petty clap-backs. But we will not tolerate harassment, hate, or attempts to intimidate our family.

We know that trust is earned through actions, not rumors. Over the years we’ve donated thousands of dollars to progressive organizations and causes we believe make our communities stronger, and we’ll continue to let those actions speak for themselves.

One final note: our children are involved, and we will do everything we can to protect their privacy and safety. If anyone attempts to doxx, threaten, or harass members of our family, we will document it and pursue every appropriate legal and reporting option available. Some of the first names she listed on her post weren’t even correct.

We welcome debates and disagreement. Thoughtful conversations between people who see the world differently are healthy, and we have no interest in creating an echo chamber. What we won’t host on this page is racism, antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism or comments that demean entire groups of people. Those comments will be removed, and offenders will be blocked.

Thank you to everyone who reached out with kindness instead of assumptions. We appreciate you more than you know. Keep causing good trouble.

We started FemMercantile because we believe the things we wear can say something about who we are and what we stand for. Sometimes they’re loud. Sometimes they’re quiet. Either way, they’re a reminder that we don’t have to stay silent.

Each bracelet is handmade by our family with 6mm glass beads, finished with silver colored acrylic beads, and includes an engraved “ABOLISH ICE” emergency whistle keychain.

Even better, $10 from every order will be donated to Maine Equal Justice, an organization fighting to protect immigrant families and expand access to justice. If you’re going to make a statement, it might as well do some good too.

If the last couple of days brought you here…welcome. We’re glad you’re here. Every purchase supports a small, progressive-owned business and helps turn outrage into action.

Drop a 🖤 if you’d wear one, and we’ll put the link in the comments.
