Update on 1 day Birds nest cuckoo clock

Started chasing a runaway cuckoo issue and finally tracked it down to something easy to overlook

The gathering pallet pivot hole in the plate

At first glance everything looked fine
-Rack counted down correctly
-Gathering pallet engaged
-Timing was correct

But under load with the strike weight pulling it would not hold and the cuckoo would run all the way to the floor

After taking a closer look at the operation it became clear the pivot hole for the gathering pallet shaft is slightly out of round

That small amount of wear is enough to
-allow the shaft to shift under load
-change the engagement angle just enough
-cause the pallet to bounce off instead of locking

What makes it tricky is
-it works when slowed down
-it works out of the case
-but fails under normal operating conditions

Which points directly to a tolerance issue under load not a timing issue

Always check your plates for wear. Even a small amount in the wrong spot can affect how the entire movement performs

It is time for a bushing to be installed

1 Day Birdsnest Cuckoo Clock Update

Had to dig a little deeper into this one.

What started out looking like a simple issue turned into a full run-through of the movement. The original verge had a loose pallet — once I pulled it out, it literally fell apart. I just received the new verge from Black Forest Imports today, got it installed, and that got things moving again, but it still wasn’t quite right.

The clock would run, slow down, then stop — but if I gave the gear a little push it would take off again. That told me something else was going on in the train.

Tracked it down to some rust and scoring on one of the time train arbors (shaft). The gear teeth themselves were fine, but the shaft had enough roughness to cause binding as it rotated. Cleaned it up and polished it out to get it smooth again so it could spin freely in the pivot holes.

Once that was sorted, it came down to final tuning — adjusting the beat so the tick-tock is even and the pendulum swings clean and centered. Need to tweak just a touch more on the beat!

These little movements don’t tolerate much friction at all. Doesn’t take much to stop them, but once everything is right they run like they should.

This is a very unique clock! DeeDee Smith and family took great care of this clock and now will be able to enjoy it for many more years!

🕰️ Birdnest 1day Musical Cuckoo Clock Update

Giving this cuckoo clock movement a deep ultrasonic cleaning today to safely remove years of old oil and buildup from the gears and click assemblies. Slow, careful restoration work is what brings these timeless pieces back to life.

🕰️ Birdnest 1day Musical Cuckoo Clock Update

Movement mounted on the test stand and was able to diagnose the problem. Disassemble, ultrasonic cleaning and then assemble and re-oil. I’m going to let it run for the next 48 hours before dialing in the strike side. This gorgeous clock is almost finished! This one is really starting to show its character, and I can’t wait to see the finished piece come together.

🕰️ Birdnest 1day Musical Cuckoo Clock Update

A little before and after comparison of this Birdnest cuckoo clock case. The earlier photo shows the normal ove the years of dust, buildup, and dull carvings, while the latest picture shows the wood cleaned up, details brought back to life, and the case looking much closer to its original character.

It’s always satisfying seeing how much these clocks can transform with some careful cleaning and patience. Still more work to do, but definitely heading in the right direction. 🕰️

About My Repairs
This started as a personal hobby after repairing my own cuckoo clocks and helping family and friends with theirs. I am not a large repair business and I am not trying to get rich doing this. I simply enjoy bringing family heirlooms back to life and keeping these clocks running for years to come.

Every clock is handled with care, patience, and attention to detail. My goal is to help others while doing something I genuinely enjoy.

🕰️ Restoration Complete – Hunter 1-Day Musical Cuckoo

This Hunter 1-day cuckoo with music box is officially finished! I repaired the dancing platform so it now spins perfectly when the music plays, and the entire movement was fully disassembled and ultrasonic cleaned to bring it back to life.

Watching the cuckoo, music, and dancers all working together again makes the work worth it. Another beautiful clock restored and running the way it was meant to!

🕰️ Birdnest 1day Musical Cuckoo Clock Update

Quick update on the cuckoo clock restoration — I’ve finished disassembling the case and now moving on to the movement itself. It’s definitely showing its age with quite a bit of rust, but the good news is I had everything running before taking it apart. That tells me the heart of this clock is still strong — now it’s time for a deep clean, polishing, and bringing it back to life the right way. Excited to see this one come together!

Very excited to fix another cuckoo clock for a family member and her loved ones!

This one is a beautiful 1-day cuckoo clock with a Regula 25-E movement. Both click springs (on the time and strike trains) had broken, which caused the weights to freely spin and drop, a clear sign those springs failed.

Parts from Black Forest Imports and another successful clock repair. Polished the movement to get the corrosion removed.
