A pool of water on this crazy smokey Monday. Listed.

There was a visible haze in my house yesterday, so we gathered our box fans and our filters to fix what we could. I watered my flowers with extra love, and spent time in the studio where I could hide a little. We didn’t eat on the porch outside and we tried to drink cold things fast. If you left any sign on your plate of a meal consumed outside, it quickly disappeared from some mean & hungry bees waiting for their chance.

This time of year is tricky. Summer has us beat, and asks for more. Berries swell, and tempers follow. The Western Smoke settles in one evening and a fox steals the last duck in the neighbors coop. I sleep well for all the swimming I’ve done, and because the windows are closed, it’s only Rudy who knew about murderous things afoot.

I hope the rain comes soon. I hope the August Lion plays nice. In Montana, it’s common for this season to be opaque wildfire that burns your nose and eyes, so I have lots of half-cooked ideas and some pretty ugly things to show for it. But I think it’s an okay thing to make creativity a priority when it flows more like heat, and sweat. Uncomfortable? Yes. Fruitless? Definitely not. I’m onto a lot of good things, and am trying hard to show up on time with a smile. I’m a perfectionist at heart, and a dreamer at best. So head down, t**s up. That’s what my sister always says. It’s nice to remember that August might not always play nice, but her burn fades and tans us all a perfect shade of beautiful, and I’d argue we all wear our best colors in August. Especially blue.

It’s the heat and the high of the summer. The rearranging of a day so you can put your whole body underwater. It’s when squash start running circles around us and there’s no grill large enough to contain the bounty. It’s hot rocks and riffles of river, blue pools and the kindness of strangers. It’s August, and not angry like the wasps eating my last bite of burger, at least not yet. There’s smoke in the air but sweetness in the pinks that reflect the mirrors and windows that keep us in, and out. I’m still unsure about my role this time of year, when everything feels blown out and overexposed and hot to the touch. But it’s morning stillness and the scent of yarrow underfoot crunching like straw, and Hot Pink Snapdragons sneaking smiles in cracks of asphalt, and paper-plate-sized Dahlia faces that roar into August like the Fire Lion we love to hate to love.

River Keeper ring (sold) from a few summers ago, (maybe ‘22?!) that reminds me of secret cold pools on riverbanks I wished I cold teleport to when the bench torch flame is too hot to play solder games with. 📸 : Katie Wood captured this for a summer collection where water and blue was the name of the game. Maybe it still is?

I sat down with a big iced tea last night, put on my photographer panties, and listed these two rings! In the shop, taaa-daaa! If you look close, the mason jar bottom says ‘MADE TO LAST’ and we all know that’s the goal around here 😉❤️

In 18k bezels, these Turquoise babes really are stunning. I’ve tried very hard to create texture and refinement here, and only effed up big once on the lavender turquoise hallmarking in the ring interior, realizing that I used a 14k stamp on accident instead of 18k, deeeerrrrrp! I almost decided not to sell it because of that, but in the end, it’s just part of my learning curve. Please read the description of each ring so you know what I’m talking about. These rings are heirlooms by nature and so, the story matters. Hand carved, cast, fabricated, set, and cried over at this summer jewelers bench!

Holding Summer gently.

And myself.

It’s no secret I’ve been slow to work, and struggling in the studio this year. For some time now, I’ve known that I have chosen comfortable design and rock-solid skillset over uncharted territory and artistic risk and the ugly process of learning in real time. I like sentences with correct punctuation. I like stories with endings. I like cohesive voices and bodies of work that really set you off on a new adventure like MAAA’AM YES! And damn if I’m jusssst about there. But I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t really uncomfortable to learn and make mistakes in front of an audience. I know there’s ego in that. But I also know with my jewelry, especially at this stage in the game: it’s got to be right…or it’s wrong. I’ve cracked stones this month. Mis-hallmarked Gold. Mishandled shipments. Become a real tyrant at work, my staff of one, because stones won’t sit right or textures are too much or bezels are too short. The list goes on. BUT! Thanks to many many artists out there, and David Bowie’s conversation about depth in work….I continue to remember this: Uncomfortable IS ACTUALLY where you want to be when you are an artist, just before something really really really big happens!

Yeehaw kids!!! It’s Under The Big Sky kickin’ off today, and I hope you look as stinkin’ cute as Strohm Fouty in pink Glacier Rim Hats and ‘fit from The Toggery Montana this weekend! If you’re looking for a good lid, be sure to swing over to Becky and Todd at the festival under the big barn to get all set up, and don’t forget to wear the good jewelry (I just restocked your favorite gold pieces at The Toggery Montana downtown)! Let’s chase that joy like a state champion barrel racer, find a good chunk of shade for the afternoon heat, and be sure to tell Stapleton I said hi!!

Kinda like what the kids say: ‘Touch Grass’. But River.

I’m considering summer like an old friend passing through town, a quick stay just long enough to not get sick of eachother. It’s play hard/work hard in this neck of the woods, my studio is hot as hell by 4, and fire isn’t exactly fun to play with when you can feel sweat dripping from your back as you bend over in prayer to the bench gods.

All these great ideas roll through me and I try to grasp what I can, but all I really want to do is float around in moving water, like a river otter. 🦦 💎 I hope to catch an eddy soon so I can show you what I have been swimming in. For now, it’s a lot of fun finding my way downriver.

📸 Katie Wood shot on the banks of the Flathead a few summers back when I made you all a bunch of ‘River Keeper’ rings. Best I bring these back!

📸other videos and Rudy at my side in the casting space, where I have been finding new skill and challenges!

What’s one sign you have ADHD? Could it possibly be choosing a random corner of the studio to paint a color called ‘Blue Lapis’…to match your trade beads from the late 1800s…when you have one billion other things you shouuuuuuld be doing…in July…in the busiest part of the year…and then ending up buying window trim and starting THAT project too?! Asking for a friend. 😂😂😂

Serendipity, a MT Sapphire ring off the bench and out the door today!

I’m really enjoying the new textures coming out of the wax carving process, and the old bench skills that are being dusted off. This is just the sweetest 3mm Teal MT Sapphire from Philipsburg, flush set in 14K on my ring carving, with some stars and added dots and marks for a full cosmic effect. LOVE this one, and VERY excited about this direction!
