Saying goodbye to a very interesting, and frankly underrated, bottle: Hirsch Single Barrel Double Oaked Cask Strength.

Classic bourbon profile, with typical (but excellent) double oaked character. And at 63% ABV, it’s as bold as you would expect.

To be completely honest, this makes me think what a double oaked Stagg might be like.

When Mini-Bottle Monday meets Malt Monday - Tamdhu 12 Year.

Nose: malt forward, honey, dark fruit, stewed pears

Palate: barrel spice, malt funk, honey, citrus zest, somehow creamy and sharp at the same time

Finish: medium-long finish, but stays very high, turns from sweet to quite tannic, spicy throughout (especially for 43% ABV)

Welcome to the weekend; let’s kick it off with Finished Wh***ey Friday - Dark Arts 8.5 Year Old Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Finished in Armagnac Casks.

Sweet, fruity, rich, balanced with a healthy dose of spice, proof (60% ABV), and barrel influence.

I don’t think I can say enough about the exquisite blending and finishing being pulled off by the wizards over at ***ey.

Also, I want to acknowledge that this is a barrel pick by the great folks at in Tega Cay, SC.

Happy Old Fashioned Monday. Today was the second try with the MyBar Infuser.

Today’s recipe: 6 fresh cherries, 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, and 6 dashes of Orange bitters, with a little over 2 ounces of Penelope Architect bourbon. All through the infuser, then strained into a glass with a 2” clear ice cube.

Notably better than my first attempt. I think the secret is that you have to use more of the infusion ingredients than you think. I know this looks extremely dark and red, but the cherry flavor is pretty spot on (not at all overwhelming) despite the look. I also think this works better with bourbon than with rye (at least as far as this compared with my first attempt.

The experiments shall continue.

Not-So-Wh***ey Wednesday: a review of Adictivo Tequila Doble Reposado.

As those who follow me know, I am a devoted wh***ey/wh**ky guy; bourbon, rye, scotch, American single malt, etc. But my friend is a tequila man, and gave me this sample and wanted me to try it and review it, so here goes. (I will review/comment on this in the same format I would use for a wh***ey review.)

Nose: very sweet, reminds me of new make bourbon where the cuts were a little too wide, butterscotch that has gone a bit funky/off, soured apple juice

Palate: extremely sweet, almost overpoweringly so, no burn, tropical fruits, over-ripe banana

Finish: still very sweet, very slight heat, disappeared almost instantly

Because the reviews I find on-line indicate that this is a well-regarded product (although noted as exceptionally sweet), and I can concede that it seems well crafted, I have to assume that I am just not a tequila fan and will just stick with my wh***ey.

This is a big Fresh Crack Friday for me; my first ever taste (and review) of a Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Wh**ky - Springbank 10 Year.

Nose: Sweet, stewed pears, bitter citrus, malty, light peat, candied almonds

Palate: Much less sweet than the nose, earthy, mild peat, seaside brine, heavy dose of minerality, just a hint of fruit

Finish: Reasonably long, but finishes quite high, rather tannic/dry

Overall, this is an excellent pour, and proves the point that I have heard for a long time, that Campbeltown wh**ky is very high quality, and also very distinctive.

Been working on finishing a few bottles that have been open for a while. Tonight we say goodbye to this bottle of Four Roses Small Batch Select.

The blending team at Four Roses is awfully good at their craft. Tremendously well balanced, sweet and spicy, enough proof to give it serious backbone, classic Four Roses floral notes from their high rye mashbill. A definite winner.

My wife, who not only has a great nose, but also a wonderful way of expressing what she smells said it was “cozy” and I think she is right.

As I’ve said previously when killing a bottle, sorry to see this one go, but excited to choose what takes its place on the shelf.

Stagg Down Saturday!!

This, like every Stagg bottle I’ve had, was bold, sweet, and interesting. It will be missed, but it’s departure opens a spot on the “show” shelf.

When you reach the “Thirsty Thursday” portion of your vacation week, you go all out.

A cherry-wood smoked Old Fashioned, with Stagg, extra orange bitters, an over-sized hunk o’ orange rind, and two Amarena Wild Cherries, over a big ol’ 2.5” block of clear ice.
