I finally finished this ring for a customer, after figuring out the hard way how soft appatite stone is! The first stone arrived cracked, the second stone was cracked by me, and the third stone was perfect and setting it was smoooooth! You have to do things a little differently when you're working with a softer stone, but it can be done! And the great colors of appatite are worth the effort!!

This was our great-grandma Mabel's ring. It's around 75 yrs old. My sister asked if I could fix it, as it has been missing a prong and was super-glued into the setting many years ago 😂 I gave it a shot, and it was soooo fun to work on! I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I had the chance to forge the metal into the right shape for the prong, and then match up the old texturing. Jewelry this old is pretty forgiving, since it was all done by hand, and therefore there is some variation in all of the details, which we don't see much these days. My only "before" pic didn't show the patina that had developed over the decades, and it was really fun to polish this and get it closer to the original shine and beauty that it had when Grandma Mabel wore it.

I haven't made a bezel in a while, but I've been eyeing up some cool turquoise, so I figured I'd get back into the swing of it. This one is silver with yellow gold accents. I had a hard time getting the contrast to show up in pictures, but I like it and will do more with mixed metals
