"Wade in the Water" is the first single from The Pen is Mightier, the second studio album and fourth release from the Stephen Philip Harvey Octet. This release features seven original compositions inspired by the poems, plays, memoirs, and novels of Black American writers, as well as a notable spiritual. The album marks the tenth release from saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Stephen Philip Harvey. Out February 5, 2027, on Hidden Cinema Records.

Pianist/Composer YANIV TAUBENHOUSE Drops New Single "Wind" From New Album, Moments in Trio Vol. 4 - Circles

Wind symbolizes the constant drawing of invisible circles through endless free-flowing shapes created by the movement of air. The intro and outro of the song are made from short melodic fragments (2-3 notes each) that are like the drawing of little circles. Those little melodies keep appearing throughout the song. It is written in a 5/8 time signature, and there is something about the pulse of that rhythm that feels very circular. “While performing this song with the trio, we have been exploring the idea of switching between the smaller five (5/8) and the bigger fives (5/4 and 5/2) and dividing those rhythms into different rhythmic groupings. This makes me think of the unpredictability of wind and how it constantly changes its pace, shape, and rhythm,” said Taubenhouse.

“Canyons” was co-written during the pandemic with the great bassist/composer Adam Neely. Schonig elaborated, “we go way back to when he was a student in the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop and I was the house drummer. Miho Hazama first created an arrangement to feature the vocalist Michael Mayo. He wasn’t available for the date so I thought about who this would be great for and Nicole Zuraitis came to mind. Her performance on this tune is one of my favorite parts of this record. She sings an incredible solo that is just mesmerizing.”

The Jared Schonig Big Band is an elite group of musicians, as ego-less and in servitude of the greater musical good as a group of crème-de-la-crème artists could be. Hearing them in all their glory, live at one of NYC’s finest jazz rooms, on Jared Schonig Big Band – Live at Dizzy’s, is a treat. Featured on this recording are many of the drummer/composer’s gems, arranged by some of the most acclaimed big band leaders/arrangers/composers working today, including Mike Holober, Miho Hazama, John Daversa, Alan Ferber, Jim McNeely and Laurence Hobgood. Schonig’s love for large ensemble and big band music runs deep to his early forays into jazz, and many of these arrangers were initially heroes to the drummer/composer who then became colleagues and ‘bosses’ when Schonig became a much-in-demand sideman on NYC’s thriving big band scene.
