Somewhere inside this building is a 400‑year‑old amber chessboard from Königsberg — the city my family comes from. Made for kings, carved from Baltic amber, with gold leaf glowing under every square.

Today I’m going to see it in person.

Why? Because I make amber chess sets the same way — by hand, in my Brooklyn workshop. The only Baltic amber manufacturer in the USA. Same material, same tradition, four centuries later.

Two hundred fifty years ago, this land was still being built. Half a world away, in Königsberg — once the amber capital of everything — chessboards like this one were already being carved by hand. A seventeenth-century board from that same tradition now sits in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We carry that lineage forward from a workshop in Brooklyn: thirty-two chessmen, each hand-poured from raw Baltic amber, cognac and honey gold, no two alike. Built the way the best American things are — one piece, one pair of hands, at a time.
