Ode to Hockomock Island

It is well worth it
to push through
the brisk, panicked walk
through a marsh army
of mosquitoes and horseflies,
to ring the bell halfway,
where the bugs fall back,
and enter the serene,
breathtaking
Island of Hockomock.

Adventure dogs, elated.
Humans celebrate
with cheap red w**e,
and ooohs and ahhhs
over marsh, mud, islands,
and endless sea.

Gulls stomp the mud
Pulling worms and yapping
beside prehistoric herons
and elegant white egrets.

Sea air dampens skin.
Clothes rarely stay on
as we paddle and trudge
through salt water.

Dogs follow the edge of land,
sometimes swimming out,
chasing a clammer
through the channel
to the other island.

We howl after them,
cheering their return
smelly, soaked, blissful.

At night, seals bellow
from a distant shore.
We think we see one,
But, maybe it’s a rock.
We roll dice and bicker
Over rules and turns.

We bathe swamp dogs
With buckets of salt water
And sing their prayers
As they playfully scamper
Along the island’s paths.

We sip wh***ey at night,
Bodies sway to Rodriguez.
We swear he’s
Better than the great Dylan.
But he could never best
The call of the great heron.

I break a piece of my heart
and plant it beneath
Wading bird feet
to return to it
in a year’s time.
