Australian opal. 22k gold and silver, seamlessly integrated. A high bezel protects the stone and lets it be worn, not just admired.

Photographed on an old slab of redwood that is was working on, the light caught something that felt almost like film from childhood. Opal is hard to capture. In person, it moves.

Alloyed, milled, forged by hand in studio. Same methods since 1964.

The variscite reads like a map, webbed matrix, no two stones the same. The golden beryl catches light differently: chatoyant, a soft cat’s eye moving across the dome as it turns. Two of my absolute favorite gemstones. Turquoise’s cousin and emerald’s sister.

Like the mighty Phoenix...we will rise again! We are safe from the fire and looking forward to opening again soon (when it is safe to do so) to our community and our guests.

A run of the mixed metal Big Sur classics, then a turn to these.

Two tourmalines set in 22K and 18K. Hand-forged. Never cast. Gems from the collection. The band runs slim, for me. Still substantial.

Each one sits slightly off. Done right, it comes to a perfect symmetry.

This old bronze Buddha’s hand has sat on the deck through every season. Patina against smooth gold. Both ageless. Soft. Elegant. What do you prefer: antique bronze patina or makers hands?

Carried this custom made ring up the ridge Wednesday. Delivered it to an old friend. Her family has kept the old de Angulo place for decades.

Jaime de Angulo homesteaded here more than a century ago. He named it Los Pesares. The Sorrows.

He came before the road. Born in Paris to Spanish parents, trained as a doctor, he gave all of it up for this ground. He rode the ridge on horseback, often naked, a handkerchief at his throat. For years a shack was enough.

Forty years he spent among the Pit River people, writing down languages that were going silent. From what he learned he made stories for his children. Old Man Coyote. Father Bear. Fox and Antelope.

Beside the big house stands a one-room cabin. He inscribed those animals into the adobe walls. In the right light, you can still find them.

The old Big Sur. Before the million tourists. Before the mansions. A different world. A different time.

I grew up lower on the same ridge. My father raised me there. The old studio stood there too.

Much has changed. Much is exactly the same. Our work is on Instagram now. Same soul as fifty years ago.
