Help Restore A Piece Of American History

Help Restore A Piece Of American History This page is dedicated to restoring a piece of American History a 1978 American La France Water Chief Aerial Ladder Truck, which will be donated to a VFD.

Ladder 6 was originally built for Neville Island, Pennsylvania in 1978 at a cost of $273,000.00. It then served in Waterloo, New York and finally for 15 years for Derby Line Fire Department in Vermont before being purchased by us. We decided the truck was in too good of condition to be retired, so we have decided to refurbish and bring it up to date and donate it to a department that cannot afford

to purchase a new ladder truck. It is a 1978 American La France Century Series Water Chief with a 102' ladder and 1000gpm master stream, it has a 8V92 N Silver Series Detroit Diesel with 15K miles. So far we have completed some of the major mechanical work, such as replacing the tires, repairing hydraulic leaks, replacing the radiator, belts and hoses. This is a completely volunteer effort with the work being funded by donations from individuals, and companies. There is still much work to be done to bring it into current compliance, and with your help we can preserve a piece of firefighting history and still help save lives and property. This page will help you follow her restoration progress, tell you how you can help, and provide suggestions, feedback and answer any questions we may have. We will post lists of the NFPA 1901 equipment requirements, What items that need to be done, what has been donated and of course pictures of the progress. We are a group of volunteer firefighters and this is being done not for any kind of profit, its simply being done to help a department in need. Those who donate items or monetary funds will receive a note from us thanking you for your help and what your donation was used for. We will have a Gofundme account, accept donations by PayPal or by mail. We appreciate everyone who will have a hand in helping out on this ambitious project and we look forward to sharing it with you,

Happy Easter everyone. Unfortunately I have some not so good news to share. The blower on the engine in the truck seized up and suffered a catastrophic failure. We have been blessed enough to have a blower donated to us. Which is being rebuilt with new bearings and seals by our mechanic Gary Walls. The project was in severe danger of coming to an end. While we were disassembling the engine there are several things that need to be replaced. The coolant temperature sensor, the overheat warning sensor, oil pressure sensor and both thermostats need to be replaced along with the blower screen. Since we had to drop the oil pan to inspect trying to determine what was wrong the oil pan seal will also have to be replaced. A leak was discovered at the oil filter housing so it will also have to have a gasket replaced. We have called and gotten prices on the sensors from Detroit and they are offering us a 50% discount over normal pricing. The total comes to $289.32. We also have to replace the oil and coolant in the engine. The parts would have been $350.00 without the discount. Monetary donations are desperately needed at this time. If you are able to help out no matter how small or big the amount anything helps. Please see the pinned post at the top of the page for our PayPal information. Please send any donations friends and family and we will also be glad to send you a receipt for what is purchased with your donation. Without your help the project may come to an end. Thank you.

A very special thank you to Stacey Crotteau for our first financial donation. A second equally as important is to Neil Key, Vann Key and Steve at 2 keys Custom Paint and Body who have worked tirelessly for the last 10 days getting this phase done. Monetary donations as well as electrical and exhaust system parts are desperately needed to continue with work. In the last 30 days a total of $600.00 have been spent in materials and labor from the body shop. Without your help the project will come to a grinding halt. Please consider a donation of any kind as much work remains to be done in order to donate the truck to Lake Preston VFD. Thank you in advance.

Some new donations have been pledged. We will be upgrading the Mars 888 light with new components and LED lighting. Line Master is donating the two clipper switches to activate the Federal Q siren and a few more donations are in the works. Many thanks to 2 Keys Custom Restoration for doing the massive undertaking of all the paint and body work, to Finish Master for working very hard to match the red paint and many others.

As we have been disassembling components we have found more that we are gonna have to do body work wise. Several compartment doors have severe rust, the panels over the wheel wells were prepped and painted poorly so those will be redone as well. We did get a quote yesterday that we feel is very fair, to reupholster the two jump seats and to replace the headliners for $130.00. Now donations are in desperate need for that project, the exhaust, and to replace all the seals in the ladder pipe. The highest donor will still receive the Monopoly Firefighters Edition as a gift from us.
