Good God, I’ve been waiting for spring since the fall! When you put a bulb in the ground in November and cover it, it’s less than satisfying to see nothing for months. But THEN … 😍🌷🌷🌷

Hello, childhood, I know you!💜
I passed this passionflower the other day, and it instantly transported me to being 8 and playing in our back yard. Mom had a beautiful purple one growing on the house near the kitchen window.

What’s in your yard that will be someone else’s memory someday? 🌸💕

Different view, different show! These dance partners were cast separately on opposite angles of the stoop planter to entertain everyone coming and going on the sidewalk from both directions with two different looks. The lime green Hakone grass seems to be everyone’s favorite, and is she a showstopper with that orange begonia ? Taking her place on the other side is my always-fave purple heart plant. 🕺🏼💃🏻

Dance partners! The best way to show off your garden fave is to give her someone to dance with. My ‘Little Lime’ hydrangea is shaking her b***y here with this purple and silver striped tradescantia (aka Wandering Jew or inch pant) and you can’t deny how great they are together.

When you plant your next shrub or flower, consider who might add to her dance moves. I’ll share more in my next posts. 💃🏻🕺🏼

She’s a real head-turner!

You can’t walk past this normal, regular-looking shrub without smelling the perfume in the air. I love watching people look all around as they go by, wondering what in the heck they’re smelling. (Seriously, it’s just not what you expect walking down the sidewalk here. Subway smell… sure. But this? Nah. )

Nobody expects the flower on this holly look-alike to be so crazy awesome! This girl is no stiff holly … she’s a special tea olive with a holly-shaped leaf. Most of my clients know this scent well because tea olive is my favorite shrub for gardens. 😀

Thank you to my neighbor Pam for making MY stoop smell so great ! 🤍🤍🤍

Don’t be a hater.

Poor goldenrod is always blamed for sneezy allergies, but hold on there !! Don’t point your finger at goldenrod ! It’s ragweed’s fault!

Seasonal allergies are caused by polen that is carried in the wind, and goldenrod pollen is too heavy to blow in the breeze… it just happens to bloom at the same time as our tickly friend, ragweed. Goldenrod is actually a super important late-summer provider for pollinators like bees and butterflies.

See her here heading the path in this late-summer/fall border at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Hey, , I’ve never seen so many things alive at a cemetery! Every single visit is a treat! 🌼

He’s just not that into you. Trust me.

So many clients say they want flowers but not bees. I know it’s hard to hear it, and I don’t want to hurt your feelings… but … if he’s into that flower like that, what could he possibly see in you???

My bumble bee here is all cozy with this late-summer-blooming anemone. Include a few of these pretty babies in your garden so you can have that special something to help transition you from summer to fall.

And then you can get all up close and have your own little National Geographic moment like I did. 🐝🌸💕

Forget menopause … sign me up for DIAPAUSE!

That’s right … while the rest of the world watched the British monarchs these past couple of weeks, I was watching monarchs too … these gorgeous monarch butterflies were flitting around and loving this flowering sedum! But the chilly wind reminded me that summer is over, and fall is marching in … and I realized these garden fairies will soon be heading to their winter homes in Mexico. That’s right. With these little wings, they migrate to forests in central Mexico and hang out in trees, entering a dormant phase called diapause until spring temperatures rise and they can reproduce.

With this weekend’s dipping temps reminding me that winter is on its way, I am thinking diapause might be great for me. 🤔

No tortilla chips needed ! With this ‘guacamole’ hosta in the garden, every day can be Guacamole Day! 🥑

This gorgeous shade lover will entertain you all summer long with her avocado-color leaves and her lavender flowers. What more could you possibly want ?????
(Ok, a little bit of Modelo Especial with that guac, you say? Alright… I know … sign me up!)

This pic came straight from my favorite perennial grower, in Atlanta. ‘Guacamole’ is one of my favorites there, and I choose it all the time. Thank you Laura! You rock !
💜

Happy National Guacamole Day! 🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑🍺

My new drinking buddy.

I swear to you, look… he’s smiling. Or maybe just drunk, I’m not sure.

Dragonflies are actually good for the garden because they eat mosquitos and other unwanted bugs. I’ll share my beer with this cutie pie any time!🍺

Well hey there !!!!

When you go to Canada and your Southern-zone limelight hydrangeas are there to welcome you, it feels like a family reunion !

Fun fact : Because panicle hydrangeas (cone-shaped flowers) bloom on new growth, they can take the cold winters up into zone 3 … like Minnesota and the lower parts of Canada!
