🗳️Election Day is Nov 3!
(Early midterm election voting is open)
This year, voters will decide all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, 35 Senate seats, 36 governorships, and numerous state and local offices.
Voting is an instilled value in my family- my mom, grandma, aunties, uncles etc have always put voice to how much our people fought for our voting rights and the importance of casting my vote. Whether it’s on a national scale or a local level (including tribal), politics are a conversation in my family.
My mom has always been very ‘boots to the ground’ when it comes to voting. She has volunteered during numerous elections and registers people to vote. Which means I’ve been registered to vote since I was 17 1/2, the earliest I could get registered. In 2012, my mom attended the Democratic National Convention as a delegate from AK during Obama’s reelection- fun story about that, she volunteered to make Tlingit style vests for all of the delegates, so my sister and I were also volunteered (ahem, volun-told 😂) to help and spent many a late night putting vests together for all the delegates from Alaska. ☺️
As an Afro-Indigenous woman, I stand on the shoulders of the people who had to fight for my voting rights. Generations before me worked so hard to disrupt the injustice of voter discrimination. They protested in the streets and spoke in front of congress to get numerous anti-discrimination acts passed in order for Indigenous people, African American people and Women to have the right to vote.
In recent years I’ve been a less reliable
voter than in the past- but I can’t do that anymore. I am guilty of getting disillusioned with the entire process and not voting out of frustration, but after these past couple of years, I’m done with that nonsense. I have a self-belief that I can’t complain about politics unless I participate in elections, so I’m holding in my thoughts until after Nov 3 😂 The reality is, this isn’t the time to be passive or neutral when it comes to politics in the US.
I’m not posting this to endorse any candidate or political party- real talk, I just want people to vote in this next election, that’s all. ♥️ Gunalchéesh
