Carlsen Field Farmers In Need Of Immediate Assistance Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries Avinash Singh Arnold Ram Couva Reg Corp Ravi Ratiram
The Covid 19 Pandemic was suppose to be a wake-up call for everyone. We saw the importance of Agriculture yet we have continued to neglect this vital sector here in Trinidad. The Farmers of Carlsen Field have been neglected by governments for the longest time. We have been told by the councilor for the area that we don't fall under his purview because Carlsen Field Farmers are on state lands.
Today i would like to highlight some of our issues. While reading I would like you to keep in mind that Carlsen Field Farmers are Livestock Farmers.
Water- We the FARMERS are without an adequate supply of water. Currently we are getting water one day a week and it is not a full day nor is it with enough pressure to fill our tanks. However the areas where the Squatters are have water 24/7 with pressure. Farmers have metered connections but Squatters have no bills.
Electricity- Our entire area has been suffering from Low Voltage. Some of our street lights were removed by T&TEC subcontractors. When we call about street lights which needs to be repaired we are ignored. We the farmers reached out to MP for Caroni Central- Arnold Ram and he wrote a letter to T&TEC and got a crew from T&TEC to visit the area and repair some of the lights however there are still alot of street lights which need repairs and then there are those which need to be replaced. Some are in need of replacement because they were removed by subcontractors from T&TEC. The crew who did the repairs indicated that another crew deals with replacement. We are hopeful that with the continued help from the MP we can eventually get all the street lights working again.
Roads- The roads in Carlsen Field are in a deplorable condition. Farmers transporting milk to the depot will leave home with a full churn of milk but arrive at the milk depot with ¾ churn because of the amount of large pot holes leading up to the milk depot. Police aren't able to do routine patrols in the area because of the road conditions. Regional Corporation says these are Agriculture Roads so it doesn't fall under their jurisdiction. The road edge is littered with garbage which ranges from soda bottles to coconut husk to dead animals. We have taken pictures of persons who were doing the littering and sent it in to both the police and the councilor for the area yet nothing has been done to curtail the dumping in the area.
The roads have not been repaired by any ministry for years. The only repairs which would have taken place would have been by farmers who bought materials such as oil sand and crusher run.
CEPEP has been maintaining only particular areas where persons have links connecting them with those in authority. We have illegal vending on the road side which is causing even more damage to the road edge and yet again each department passes it off as not being their issue because it is Carlsen Field and as such its state lands. We have Squatters moving into the area and committing acts of vandalism and again nothing is being done.
Our land Lease isn't being renewed. We have farmers in their 60s who are waiting for their lease to be renewed. It is time that the Ministry of Agriculture pay some special attention to Carlsen Field.
