What shocked us initially because of the vast difference of how we expected a hospital to be has now mellowed into a gentle way of life. We got used to hanging clothes at the rest areas, while peeps smoke right outside our ward and next to the laundry. We also got used to taking our trash out on our own to the common refuse room. It became an everyday thing that we have slowly grew accustomed to.. walking to get hot water from the hot water room… watching a cockroach walk by and having no reaction. Yes it’s not the best of cleanliness but it’s enough. The nurses are there when you need them, you can talk to the doctors immediately… they are always warm and straight forward and sometimes that’s what we need.
There is something comforting about this new (to us) culture that we have learnt to be thankful for.. ❤️

Daddy, I’m thankful to see you standing, I am thankful to see you up and well. I know it frustrates you that your right arm cannot move and your fingers do not listen to you. I know it’s easier said than done to tell you to stay patient while half your body seems to be asleep. I see you swing your body just to get it to move that little bit so that you can feel like you still are in control.
Daddy, truth is none of us have life in control. So let’s flow where it brings us. I know how you feel, and I know no matter how we try to put ourselves in your shoes. We will not truly understand how it feels like to be you now..
We can only promise you that we will be here for you every step of the way. You will never be alone. ❤️

Then we went to the supermarket and we are so impressed to see the fish tanks so clean and clear ! It’s even clearer than our fish tanks at home! Not sure if we should be happy that they have such good clean waters to live in or they are waiting to be someone’s dinner 🤣😆

Today .. BEL decided that we need to do something a little different than the usual routine… as my dad stabilises, BEL understands the need to take into consideration the mental and emotional health of the rest of the family members.
So today… we crossed opposite to check out the ferry terminal that we spied so long from our window..
Then we checked out a local mall.. it was a good fun day and a quiet respite from our usual hospital runs. ❤️

Today .. we left for the hospital earlier than most days. Because the doctor called me a few times asking to meet me. Lucky thing our 2 护工 are always responsive and keep me updated on all goings. If not ! Doctor Duan (段医生) you want to scare me ahh!!!😅
Every day a certain routine has been set… I will pre order breakfast for my dad before I sleep. Breakfast is always about 8am. Then we will rouse awake , have hotel breakfast and then head over to the hospital which is about 10 mins car ride away.
We are very blessed to be staying in a hotel that’s taking such good care of us.. even offering to make porridge for my dad. They heard that my mum is also sick and coughing badly , they made her a herbal concoction for cough. 🥺
We get to hospital , and my mum will feed dad food and more food 😆 After which , our lunch will arrive at about 1-2pm.
After lunch, dad leaves with his 2 护工 to Accupuncture first , then physio. Usually it takes approx 1 hour plus in total… however recently we have been adding new exercises at physio so dad gets back about 4 plus instead. Today we came back at 5pm! Every day after accupuncture and physio, we will pop by the nurses station to take his blood pressure again…
Then we will head back to his room to be cleaned up and have a change of clothes… mum will then feed dad more food 🤣
We will start to head back to hotel at about 6pm… and then Towkay will head to gym, and the rest of us R&R before dinner at 730-8pm.
Dad is improving day by day… today he’s able to stand longer than usual… he still is not able to move his right hand and it does give him frustration… so we gently remind him that it would take time and we take it step by step…
We aim to move the fingers first , then slowly we work on grip.. and eventually other movements…
I was surprised to see how much the arm has started to shrink over just non movement of about 1 week plus !
Jiayou daddy! Everyone is cheering you on!! 🎉🎉🎉

The Singapore toilet cleaner is now sunning herself with someone else’s vegetables 🤣 I’m glad that my sense of humor is still intact. Will you see this in Singapore hosp? Probably not.. is there a strange kind of comfort in seeing something like this? Absolutely !

While my dad now does his physio.. I have time to type my thoughts and the daily goings. The air is good and fresh in Dali, sometimes maybe too windy. The sun is strong , many wear the UV protection jackets. We started to wear them too.. we are learning the Dali way.
Yesterday 1 of the hotel staff shared with me that she is a Dali local, that the people of Dali believe in doing their best once they commit themselves to a job. They put their heart into it, I can attest to that. She says the public hospitals undergo weekly and monthly assessment by the hospital and board hence she feels that it keeps standards to a certain degree as compared to private ones. After an experience with a private hospital in Kunming, I think she may be right.
It is truly a blessing to be here for rehab, the care the dedication the sincerity of the help you get is something that will be very hard to find back in SG.
Not that the people in SG are not good, but it’s just a different way of life , a different culture. Perhaps a culture we used to have but have lost.
There is nothing to compare , or to lament.
It is just the way it is .. the only way forward is to adapt, to content and to be grateful for every experience.
Through tears, through grit , through laughter and perseverance.
We will see us through because life always finds a way!

When I was washing the toilet and took some time to wait for the chemicals to soak in… a random older lady squats outside our ward 😆 it’s something I am getting used to. Sometimes it’s uncles sometimes it’s aunties, sometimes it’s the Hui minority group older ladies like this one (correct me if I’m wrong, because I never ask her but I know this hospital serves the Bai community).
I feel comforted to have so many people around us, I don’t feel alone or afraid. I know if something ever happens (Choy!) many people will come running.
Dali people are simple, they are good hearted.
I was told there are 56 main groups here in Dali.
We are blessed to be recovering in a community as earnest and warm as this is.
Yes it may not be the most polished.
But what heals the soul and mind and eventually the body is kindness , love and purity of intentions.
Thank you Dali for pushing me out of my comfort zones , for returning me back to my roots, to remind me what I’m capable of and to allow me a chance to be hands on for my father.

A strange thing is starting to happen to me here in China.
I can’t speak for the rest but it has started to change the way I see my world, my life, and what I deem my comfort zones.
As the days go by, I start to find comfort in the way the hospital is. It’s almost like a village on its own. A village housed in a building that looks like a hospital.
Family members sitting outside at the shared corridors sitting to have their meals. Random ppl talking to random ppl. It’s almost a norm here. Strangers offering to help you just because they are helpful. The kampong spirit is strong here.
It’s something I did not expect to find comfort in and it made me realise how much I’ve missed this feeling.
Today, 1 of the nursing aides started to mop the floor.. I decided to teach him how to use Dettol to clean. He says they don’t use Dettol to clean their floors 😆
Then I ordered the cleaning supplies I needed from Mei Tuan and decided that I will take it upon myself to scrub the toilet.
It took 3 cleanings to get the toilet to be of a certain standard of cleanliness. Towkay was like .. omg you come hosp wash toilet.. but I was happy. I am happy to see that it’s clean even though my dad is not able to use toilet now. I’m happy that the toilet is cleaner for the nursing aides to use and that I am started to blend into the way of life here.
And I thought to myself, this is what life is.
When life gives us lemons, we make lemonade.
We make the best out of every situation
If we continuously make the effort to do so, we are simply unstoppable!
