Introducing the Overseas Grand Complication Openface

The openwork dial of the Overseas Grand Complication Openface frames a manual-winding calibre 2755 QP incorporating three functions representative of haute horlogerie – a minute repeater, a first in the Overseas collection, a tourbillon and a perpetual calendar. This trifecta is known in watchmaking as a “grand complication.”

Beyond its classic silhouette, this latest Overseas model lives up to the rugged reputation of the collection.

Rhythm in motion

The Calibre 2162 QP/270 beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5 Hz), a relatively slow tempo that provides ample opportunity to enjoy the tourbillon’s mechanical choreography. Likewise, the choice of a peripheral oscillating weight not only ensures the calibre’s 72-hour power reserve while maintaining slimness, but the peripheral rotor also allows a clear view of the movement and its 324 components.

A labour of love

The elegant case in polished 18K white gold, incorporating eight correctors, two push buttons, two selectors and a slider for the minute repeater is the result of a collaboration between the watchmaker who designed the movement and a designer from the Maison. This single-pair-of-hands approach is reflected in the harmonious relationship of case and functions.

Looking snappy

A retrograde date hand always looks like magic – somehow, the hand flies back at the end of the month, to begin counting all over again. But the mechanism enabling this supremely legible complication is complex. A snail cam is nestled atop the date wheel, transferring its circular movement to a line of teeth that move the date hand. At midnight on the first day of the month, the cam releases, sliding this rack freely back to its initial position.

Transfers of rotation such as this require absolute precision to function effectively, not to say adding additional build time, materials and effort, which is what makes the retrograde date such a hallmark of the Maison's perfectionism.

A Quest under the sign of the Maltese cross

An emblem of the Maison since 1880, the Maltese cross is based on a small horological mechanism that regulates mainspring tension. Although this symbol of precision continues to inspire the Manufacture today, very few models from Vacheron Constantin such as reference 4695 pictured here showcase a dial adorned with a Maltese cross decoration.
