🚨 People are now climbing over PR1 gates before opening hours… and this is exactly why the trail keeps getting stricter.

This happened before 8AM today near Pedra Rija viewpoint on PR1. Instead of waiting for the official opening time, several hikers decided to jump the gates and access the trail early.

⚠️ Be aware that this type of behavior can lead to fines from the authorities.

The opening hours and access rules exist for safety reasons, not just decoration. Please respect the trail, the staff, and the mountain conditions.

One irresponsible decision can affect the experience for everyone else.

🚨 All hiking trails closed tomorrow – May 5th, 2026

Following updated weather alerts from IPMA, all classified PR hiking trails in Madeira will be closed tomorrow (Tuesday, May 5th).

🌧️ A yellow → orange → yellow alert pattern is in place:
🟡 03:00–06:00
🟠 06:00–12:00 (most critical period)
🟡 12:00–21:00

During the orange alert, expect persistent and sometimes heavy rainfall across the entire region - including north coast, south coast, and mountain areas. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms, with rain starting as early as this evening.

⚠️ The Forest Road between Eira do Serrado and Pico do Areeiro will also remain closed.

Authorities strongly advise avoiding mountain areas and any unnecessary risk. These closures are preventive and based on safety.

🌿 Nature will wait - your safety comes first.

🚨 Big PR1 update — full route bookings will be available tomorrow 29th of April on SIMplifica! 🥾⛰️

With the reopening of the full PR1, here’s what hikers need to know:

✅ PR1 is now partially one-way
• Pico do Areeiro ↔️ Pedra Rija remains bidirectional
• From Pedra Rija to Pico Ruivo, the trail is one-way only (Areeiro → Ruivo)

⬇️ Exit from Pico Ruivo is via:
• PR1.1 Vereda da Ilha
• PR1.2 Achada do Teixeira
• In future, also PR1.3 to Encumeada (once reopened)

🎟️ New full PR1 ticket: 10,50€
Includes access to PR1 + PR1.1 + PR1.2 (and PR1.3 when reopened)

⚠️ Important:
• The 4,50€ Pedra Rija ticket remains valid only for that section
• Tickets cannot be upgraded or converted
• Hikers are responsible for their own transport logistics back from Pico do Areeiro

🚧 During this initial phase, the section Pedra Rija → Pico Ruivo is expected to operate Friday to Sunday only for roughly the next month while maintenance continues.
The Areeiro ↔️ Pedra Rija section remains open all week.

This is a major milestone for Madeira’s most iconic hike — but with limited capacity and phased access, planning ahead is essential.

Madeira now has its first official long-distance thru-hike — the GR1 Madeira Crossing. 🥾⛰️

95.5 km across some of the island’s most spectacular landscapes, linking coastal cliffs, Laurissilva forest, mountain ridges, levadas, and the central massif into one epic crossing.

From Ribeira da Janela to Caniçal (or the reverse many may prefer), this is more than a hike — it’s a true multi-day adventure through the heart of Madeira.

Would you take on the GR1? 👀
