No battery, no charger. So how does an automatic watch keep running?

1. Mainspring: a coiled spring stores the energy.
2. Gear train: slows it down and turns the hands.
3. Escapement: lets the energy out in tiny steps. Each step is a tick.
4. Balance wheel: sets the rhythm. A Seiko 4R36 beats 6 times a second (21,600 an hour).
5. Rotor: a half-moon weight that swings with your wrist and winds the spring for you.

Good to know: a 4R36 runs about 41 hours off the wrist. Stopped in a drawer? It isn't broken. Wear it, or turn the crown if your model has hand-winding (many classic Seiko 5s with the 7S26 don't, so just wear those).

Why does a dive bezel only turn one way?

1. Before the dive, line up the bezel marker with the minute hand.
2. Under water, the minute hand shows the time used on the bezel.
3. If the bezel gets bumped, it can only turn counterclockwise, so it shows MORE time used, never less.
4. You surface early, never late.

Good to know: a rotating bezel alone doesn't make a dive watch. ISO 6425 divers are rated 100 m or more and tested at 125% of that pressure.
