Kalinga Heirloom Beads

Kalinga Heirloom Beads The beads featured on this page are authentic antique Kalinga trade beads which have been acquired from various sources in Kalinga, Philippines

Trade beads have a long history in Philippine culture. Its origins can be traced to Europe, Africa, and China; the beads having been traded by the Spanish people upon reaching our shores. For the Kalingas, beads are considered as essential articles of clothing and a source of material wealth. These beads are also believed to hold certain properties that, when worn, promote good luck to its wearer.

The beads featured on this page are authentic antique Kalinga Trade Beads (unless otherwise stated) which have been acquired from various sources all over the Cordilleras; mostly from vendors belonging to old Kalinga families who have acquired the beads as heirloom pieces. Some of the beads seen here date back to the 1600-1700s; others even during an earlier period. The beads are a symbol of the proud culture of the Kalingas and a surviving relic of the trade that subsisted between peoples of various cultures in the olden days. The bead arrangements are done by Mary Grace Laoagan-Pocais, the necklaces and bracelets have been given modern twists to make them more wearable.

My Heirloom beads

Bead by bead, I thread the past,
stone by stone, the ties will last.

Agate strong, carnelian bright,
memory glows in golden light.

Hands of elders guide my own,
heritage shines-circle grown.

Restringing the past

Wearing of beads is an important aspect of Kalinga tradition, which involves not just preserving but actively using heirloom beads—whether they’re agate, glass, or carnelian—by restringing them. This practice connects the past with the present, ensuring that these cultural treasures remain a living part of Kalinga heritage.

Incorporating gold as fillers between the old beads adds a modern and luxurious touch while still honoring the tradition. It’s a beautiful way to keep the heritage alive, blending the old with the new.

I was visiting my mother at her office when in came a woman with a full neck (and ears) of Kalinga beads. I later found out she is Mrs. Emilia Bangibang, the mother of one of Ma’s officemates (tita Lilia).

I’ve long heard from Ma that tita Lilia’s mother usually visited their office wearing her full Ga’dang ensemble. It is said that she never leaves home without donning her precious heirloom beads and her Ga’dang attire. I’ve been waiting for years to meet her and see for myself, so it was a pleasant surprise to finally meet this beautiful woman with her beads and traditional (not to mention cool) bead ear piercing.

Before she left, I asked if I could take a pic of her and requested that next time she visits, she should wear her full attire just like she did before.. so I could take more photos of her wearing them. She laughed and told me it was already too tedious to go full fashionista mode considering all the layers involved (not her actual words.. but you get the point. Haha)

Here’s the pic I took before Mrs. Bangibang and her daughter left the office.. I’m hoping one of these days my request would be granted and she’d actually visit with her full Ga’dang ensemble 😍
