Why does your EV charge super fast… then suddenly slow down at the end?

When charging an electric car, it typically flies up to around 80 percent, but after that, the speed drops significantly, and that’s completely intentional.

Early on, the battery has plenty of space, so energy flows in quickly. But as it fills up, voltage rises and the system slows charging to prevent overheating and long term damage.

Inside the battery, lithium ions are being packed into tight spaces. At higher charge levels, there’s less room, and forcing them in too fast can cause something called lithium plating, which permanently harms the battery.

To avoid this, the car reduces charging speed, allowing everything to settle safely instead of rushing the final portion.

That’s also why most manufacturers recommend stopping at around 80 percent for daily use, it’s faster, more efficient, and better for battery health.

So if your charging slows down near full, it’s not a problem, it’s your car protecting itself.
