They say three objects make a collection… 🐚

So I suppose these little trio clusters are officially collections of their own.

Three tiny tidal treasures, gathered together — miniature pāua, kina, kota, p**i and other little shells, each one real and naturally perfectly imperfect.

Like a tiny beachcombing haul you can wear around your neck.

And because nature made them, no two trios will ever be quite the same.

My answer is…it depends.

Beachcombing has been around for generations. It gets us outside, slows us down and makes us notice the tiny things we would normally walk straight past.

For me, it’s good for the soul.

But there is a responsible way to do it.

I only take empty shells—never anything living. I collect small amounts, choose what’s abundant and leave anything that might still provide a home or shelter for marine life.

And beachcombing doesn’t always mean taking something home.

Sometimes I take a photograph. Sometimes I pick up rubbish. And sometimes I simply admire what the tide has brought in—and leave it exactly where I found it.

So next time you walk along the beach, slow down and really look.

I mix a little beach sand into the clay putty I use to set my pāua pendants.

It gives the setting that slightly rough, organic texture I love — nothing too perfect or polished.

And it means there’s literally a tiny bit of New Zealand nature tucked into every piece.
