I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how important it is to slow down and create something with our hands.
For me, arts, crafts and baking have become more than just something to do they’re a way to switch off from the noise of everyday life. Sitting down with a project, even for a short time, helps me reset and be present. There’s something really grounding about focusing on colours, textures, and simple creative steps.
Creativity has also been a really important part of my own healing journey. Through trauma, grief and mental illness, making things gave me a way to express what I couldn’t always put into words. It’s been a quiet, steady way to process, reflect, and move forward one small creation at a time.
I’ve also noticed how much it helps mentally. When I’m making something, I’m not overthinking, stressing or self analyzing I’m just in the moment. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference.
Another thing I love is that boost you get from finishing a piece. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Just creating something from scratch gives you a real sense of achievement and builds confidence to try new ideas.
Honestly, it’s even better when it’s shared. Crafting with others, or even just talking about what we’re making, brings people together in a really genuine way.
That’s a big part of why I started Smudgery, as a way to share my crafts with others and connect through creativity.
I’d love to know, what have you been creating lately? Here's some past projects.
Interested in any of my products or would like a commission piece please feel free to PM me. (If you are outside of New Zealand I ship case by case).
Have fun crafting and look forward to getting Smudgery.co.nz a little bit updated more. The website is a work in progress sorry for the disaster zone it currently is 😜
