Currently on the bench.

A small gathering of silver, colour and unfinished ideas waiting for their next stage.

Some are nearly there. Others still have a little way to go.

Some forms I keep returning to.

The cuff is one of them.

Sometimes substantial and built around a stone. Sometimes textured, colourful or deliberately pared back.

I don't think I've ever been particularly interested in making the same piece over and over again.

I'd rather take a familiar form and see where else it can go.

A selection of cuffs from my bench - some already with their owners, others part of an evolving body of work.

Cuffs are available as finished pieces and by commission.

The finished piece is the shortest part of the story.

Before this eagle became something that could be worn, it existed as a drawing, then a sheet of silver, then a collection of individually cut and shaped parts.

Each component had to be considered. Pierced. Refined. Positioned. Joined.

Then came the filing, cleaning, finishing - and all the small corrections that rarely make it into the final photograph.

This is the part of jewellery making I find difficult to quantify when someone sees only the finished object.

Not just material.

Labour hours.

And a lot of them.

Some commissions are made for you. This one was made with her.

For this bespoke ring, my client wanted more than the finished piece - she wanted to have a hand in making it too.

So I brought her to the bench for parts of the process she could experience herself, while I took care of the more technical stages of the build and stone setting.

I love that the finished ring carries a little more than the usual story of a commission.

She didn't simply choose it.

She had a hand in making it.

A design doesn't have to remain one thing.

MoonGlade has evolved at my bench through different stones, textures and ways of setting them - sometimes raw and irregular, sometimes much more precise and refined.

The form may be familiar, but I don't particularly enjoy making two pieces exactly alike.

I prefer leaving some room for the metal, the stones and the making process to change the outcome.

Same family. Different character.

MoonGlade, made by hand in my Kuala Lumpur studio.

Before silver takes form, there is fire.

There is resistance, repetition and the steady work of the hands. Every cut, flame and hammer mark brings the metal closer to what it is meant to become.

From one workbench grew three expressions of my practice:

JK Gems — contemporary jewellery shaped by heritage.
Jessie’s Trinket Trove — colour, individuality and pieces made to be worn.
My Artisan Hub — a place where the craft is taught and passed forward.

Different expressions. The same hands, discipline and belief in making things with meaning.

I’m Jessie Koh — silversmith, educator and founder.

Welcome to the world behind the jewellery.

JTT | Colour

Sometimes, colour is reason enough.

Long before I began making the heavier silver pieces that now occupy much of my bench, colourful gemstones were a big part of what I made.

They still are.

I love these finer pieces for completely different reasons. Tiny stones, unexpected colour combinations, delicate proportions and jewellery that can simply be put on without thinking too much about it.

Not every piece needs to make a statement.

Sometimes it just needs to make you happy when you wear it.

Colourful gemstone pieces are available through Jessie’s Trinket Trove.

Studio Notes | The Ugly Middle

There is a stage in almost every piece where it looks worse before it looks better.

The silver is scratched. There are solder marks and fire scale. Components don't quite look like they belong together yet. The bench is a mess, and the piece can feel very far from the finished jewellery I had in mind.

This is the part of making that rarely gets photographed.

But it's also where much of the real work happens: adjusting proportions, correcting things that aren't quite right, refining surfaces and sometimes undoing work only to do it again.

I've learned not to judge a piece too early.

Sometimes you just have to keep working through the ugly middle.

Collector Piece | London Blue Topaz

Some stones ask for a quieter setting.

This London Blue Topaz became the focal point of a substantial sterling silver cuff, surrounded by hand-worked texture rather than additional embellishment.

I wanted the silver to have presence without competing with that deep blue.

Bold in scale, restrained in detail, and made entirely by hand.

This is the kind of balance I find myself returning to again and again in my work.

Selected pieces and bespoke commissions are available through JK Gems.
