Commonwealth Chess Association Chairman Bharat Singh Chauhan Visits Mauritius to Discuss Chess Development and Commonwealth Championship

Port Louis, Mauritius: Commonwealth Chess Association Chairman Mr. Bharat Singh Chauhan visited Mauritius, where he held a series of high-level meetings focused on the development of chess in the country and the possibility of Mauritius hosting the Commonwealth Chess Championship.

During his visit, Mr. Chauhan had the honour of meeting H.E. Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool, President of the Republic of Mauritius, and Hon. Deven Nagalingum, Minister of Youth and Sports, accompanied by Mr. Hurrynarain Bhowany, President of the Mauritius Chess Federation and other representatives of the federation.

At a meeting held at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Port Louis, discussions centred on the growth and development of chess in Mauritius, strengthening cooperation between the national federation and the Commonwealth Chess Association, and the potential hosting of the Commonwealth Chess Championship in Mauritius next year.

The possibility of establishing a partnership between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Commonwealth Chess Association to facilitate the organisation of the championship was also discussed. The Minister expressed his support for exploring the proposal and suggested the formation of a joint working committee comprising representatives of the Ministry and the Mauritius Chess Federation. The committee will examine the practical aspects of hosting the event and submit its recommendations, following which a final decision will be taken.

Mr. Chauhan expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality extended during his visit and welcomed the interest shown by the Mauritian authorities in further developing chess and hosting a major Commonwealth chess event.

“We had fruitful discussions on the development of chess in Mauritius and the possibility of hosting the Commonwealth Chess Championship. I am grateful for the warm hospitality, encouragement and support for the growth of chess in Mauritius,” Mr. Chauhan said.

The visit further strengthened the close relationship between the Commonwealth Chess Association and the Mauritius Chess Federation and underlined the shared commitment to promoting chess across the Commonwealth.

The proposed hosting of the Commonwealth Chess Championship in Mauritius would provide an important opportunity to showcase the country's growing chess culture while bringing together players, officials and chess stakeholders from Commonwealth nations.

Mitrabha Guha wins Commonwealth Crown

Indian Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha emerged as the Champion of the Commonwealth Chess Championship 2026 after drawing his final-round game against compatriot Rohith Krishna at Hotel Citrus, Kalutara, Sri Lanka on Monday.

Guha remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, scoring six victories and three draws to clinch the title with 7.5 points. Sri Lanka’s Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage finished as the first runner-up with 7 points, while India’s Srihari L R secured the second runner-up position with 6.5 points.

The Under-20 category, which was merged with the Open section, witnessed an impressive performance from Bangladesh’s Sakline Mostafa Sajid, who won the Gold medal. India’s Ethan Vaz secured the Silver medal with an identical score of 7 points.

In the other major categories, India’s Mary Ann Gomes captured the Women’s title, Singapore’s Sreekarthika Velmurugan won the Under-20 Girls Gold medal, while India’s Ebenezer Joseph emerged victorious in the Veteran category.

Among the Youth champions, Malaysia’s Siva Kumar Nirish Kumar won the Under-18 Open title, while India’s Saranya Devi Narahari secured Gold in the Under-18 Girls category. India’s Goutham Krishna H and Akshaya Sathi emerged victorious in the Under-16 Open and Girls categories respectively.

In the Under-14 section, India’s Shaunak Badole and Mysha Perwez won the Open and Girls titles respectively. Sri Lanka’s Kiringoda Thehas Rithmitha clinched the Under-12 Open Gold medal, while India’s Manya Abhishek Drolia secured the Under-12 Girls title.

India’s Tamizh Amudhan S and Nakshatra Gumudavelly won the Under-10 Open and Girls titles respectively. In the Under-8 category, Sri Lanka’s Wijesinghe Y M Dihela Thevin secured the Open title, while India’s Pritika Nandi won the Girls title.

In a colourful closing ceremony Hon'ble Arun Hemachandra, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Government of Sri Lanka along with Mr. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Chairman Commonwealth Chess Association and Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, General Secretary of Commonwealth Chess Association along with officials of Chess Federation of Sri Lanka gave away the trophies and medals to the winners.

India Continues Dominance in Commonwealth Blitz Chess Championship

India once again stamped its authority on the Commonwealth Chess Championship by producing a remarkable performance in the Blitz format, collecting a massive 33 medals out of the 51 medals awarded across all categories. The Indian contingent secured 12 Gold, 12 Silver and 9 Bronze medals, reaffirming the country’s supremacy in the championship.

The host nation Sri Lanka also impressed with a strong showing, winning 5 Gold, 4 Silver and 6 Bronze medals. Canada claimed one Silver medal, while Bangladesh and Mauritius secured one Bronze medal each.

The Open section witnessed a clean sweep by Indian players. Iniyan Pa continued his excellent form by clinching the Blitz title after earlier winning the Rapid crown as well. Fellow Indians Rohith Krishna S and Srihari L R completed the podium by taking Silver and Bronze respectively.

In the Women’s category, host favourite Sri Lankan Women Champion Sanudula K M Dahamdi emerged victorious to bag the Gold medal for Sri Lanka. Her compatriot Newansa M Esandi secured the Silver medal, while experienced Indian campaigner Mary Ann Gomes finished with the Bronze medal.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing Standard event, third seed Mitrabha Guha moved into the sole lead in the Open section with 5.5 points after the completion of six rounds. With three rounds remaining, he holds a slender half-point advantage over a chasing pack comprising second seed Ethan Vaz, fifteenth seed Lim Zhuo Ren and local hopeful Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage.

Rich Medal Haul by India in Commonwealth Rapid Chess Championship

India emerged as the dominant force in the Rapid format of the Commonwealth Chess Championship, securing an impressive tally of 29 medals, including 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 8 Bronze medals out of the total 51 medals awarded across various categories.

The host nation Sri Lanka also delivered a commendable performance, claiming 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 6 Bronze medals. Singapore secured one Gold medal, while Bangladesh earned two Silver medals. Malaysia, Scotland and New Zealand finished with one Bronze medal each.

The Open section witnessed complete domination by Indian players, with Grandmasters Iniyan Pa, Srihari L R and Mitrabha Guha sweeping the podium positions. Grandmaster Iniyan Pa clinched the title with an outstanding performance, followed by Srihari L R in second place and Mitrabha Guha in third.

In the women’s category, WFM Fang Kun of Singapore was adjudged the Best Women player for her impressive showing in the championship.

The Rapid event featured intense competition among players from several Commonwealth nations and set the stage for exciting battles ahead in the Blitz and Standard formats of the championship being held in Kalutara, Sri Lanka.

Commonwealth Chess Championship 2026 Begins in Sri Lanka!

The prestigious Commonwealth Chess Championship 2026 has officially commenced in Hotel Citrus, Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka on Sunday, bringing together the spirit of international chess and sporting excellence. Organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka on behalf of FIDE and the Commonwealth Chess Association, the event is being held from May 17 to 25, 2026.

More than 500 players from 14 countries are participating in the championship, making it one of the largest and most vibrant editions of the event in recent years. The tournament features the Open Championship along with various age-group categories for boys and girls from Under-8 to Under-18. Rapid and Blitz events are also part of the festival.

The grand opening ceremony was attended by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage, along with Bharat Singh Chauhan, Chairman Commonwealth Chess Association and Luxman Wijesuriya, General Secretary Commonwealth Chess Association highlighting the significance of the championship for the global chess community.

With talented players from across the Commonwealth battling over the chessboard, the championship promises thrilling games, emerging talents, and memorable moments throughout the week.

Bharat Singh Chauhan Re-Elected as Chairman of Commonwealth Chess Association

Wasakaduwa, Sri Lanka, 18 May 2026: Continuing his remarkable contribution towards the growth and development of chess over the last five decades, Mr. Bharat Singh Chauhan of India has been re-elected unanimously and unopposed as Chairman of the Commonwealth Chess Association (CCA) for the term 2026–2030.

The elections were held during the Annual General Body Meeting of the Commonwealth Chess Association at Citrus Hotel, Wasakaduwa, Sri Lanka on Sunday. Mr. Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidsh Sanusi of Malaysia was elected unopposed as Deputy Chairman, Mr. G. Luxman Wijesuriya of Sri Lanka as General Secretary, and Mr. Vicky Magu of South Africa as Treasurer. Mr. Hurrynarain Bhowany of Mauritius, Mr. Allan Herbert of Barbados, Mr. Benard Wanjala of Kenya, Mr. Craig Hall of New Zealand and Mr. Crition Tornaritis of Cyprus were also elected unopposed as Executive Members of the Association.

The election process was conducted under the supervision of Hon’ble Santiago Pushpa Kumara Ekaratne, Retired Judge of the High Court, who served as the Returning Officer for the elections.

During the meeting, the Association also resolved to introduce the Commonwealth School Chess Championship, with the inaugural edition scheduled to be held in Malaysia in October 2026.

Mr. Chauhan’s re-election reflects the confidence and trust reposed in his visionary leadership and longstanding dedication towards strengthening and promoting chess across the Commonwealth nations. Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya’s re-election as General Secretary was also seen as a testament to his exceptional administrative skills and valuable contribution towards the smooth functioning and continued progress of the Commonwealth Chess Association.
