Handcrafted. ❤️

It's a word we see everywhere.

But at Jos Atelier, it means something very real.

My hands.
My tools.
My workbench.

Silver being cut, shaped, soldered, filed and polished.

Sometimes things go beautifully.

Sometimes I have to start again. 😄

But every piece carries a little of the time, care and attention that went into making it.

That's what handmade artisan jewellery means to me.

I had the most amazing time learning the art of Maltese filigree from Josianne on my recent trip to Malta! I opted for her 4 hour session because I wanted to be sure I had the time to construct a piece I truly loved. I have some prior silversmithing experience, and have been making some of my own jewelry for a few months, so I was excited to learn a new technique I could incorporate into future designs. Josianne tailored the workshop to fit my needs and goals perfectly. I came in with a few sketches and she was able to help me produce a final design that incorporated the root concept of my idea with true Maltese filigree components, structual integrity, and even the captivating design element of leaving a couple panels open (which I am SO GLAD she suggested because it really highlights the areas with filigree more).

The workshop was held in Josianne's charming boutique l-artigjana filled with the creations of local craftswomen and artists, some of whom I even got to meet during my class as they visited and worked in the shop. I loved this setup because I was able to browse and appreciate the work of other artists while I waited for my piece to be polished in the tumbler.

I loved my experience and my finished piece so much that I purchased a couple meters of filigree wire from Josianne. I can't wait to continue exploring the art of Maltese filigree back home! I left Malta having made both a stunning, completely unique filigree pendant AND a new friend who is so generous with her time and knowledge and who I can contact with any filigree/silversmithing questions in the future
