▪️One of the biggest reasons Sri Lanka is important in the gemstone world is its ancient geology.
▪️A large part of the island is made up of very old Precambrian metamorphic rocks, formed hundreds of millions to billions of years ago. These rocks have undergone enormous geological changes involving high temperatures, intense pressure and chemical processes.

▪️The original gemstone bearing rocks are often weathered over very long periods. The gemstones, being relatively resistant to weathering, can survive while softer surrounding material breaks down.

3. Sri Lanka is famous for alluvial gem deposits 💧💎
▪️A very large part of Sri Lanka's traditional gem mining is associated with alluvial deposits.
▪️An alluvial deposit is material that has been transported and deposited by natural processes such as rivers, streams and erosion.
▪️Imagine a gemstone crystal originally trapped within rock.
Over geological time:
Rock breaks down → gemstone is released → water transports it → gravel accumulates → gemstones become concentrated
Because many gemstones are hard and resistant to weathering, they can survive this journey.
▪️The resulting gem-bearing gravel is traditionally called illam in Sri Lanka.
