Identifying a synthetic emerald requires looking beyond the color and understanding the exact environment in which it was grown. If you are serious about gemology, mastering these internal characteristics is non-negotiable.
Here is exactly what you need to look for under the microscope:
🔬 1. The Hydrothermal Method
In this process, emeralds are grown under extreme heat and pressure in a highly pressurized, water-based solution—mimicking the natural formation deep within the earth.
What to look for: The classic "fingerprint" of a hydrothermal emerald is the Chevron (V-shaped) growth pattern. You may also spot "nail-head spicules" (cone-shaped voids capped with a crystal) and angular two-phase inclusions.
🔬 2. The Flux-Grown Method
Here, nutrients are dissolved in a super-heated chemical flux (like a molten bath). As the environment slowly cools, the synthetic crystal begins to form over several months.
What to look for: Look for wispy, veil-like flux inclusions that often resemble delicate lace or twisted fabric. Because they are grown in metal crucibles, you might also find highly reflective, opaque metallic platelets (usually platinum or gold) trapped inside the stone.
