Carat and karat may sound similar, but they mean two very different things in jewelry. A carat (ct) is used to measure the weight of gemstones, such as diamonds, where 1 carat equals 0.20 grams. The higher the carat weight, the larger and often more valuable the stone can be.

A karat (K), however, is used to measure the purity of gold, not its weight. Pure gold is 24K, while 18K and 14K mean the gold is mixed with other metals like silver or copper to improve strength and durability.

For example, a diamond can be 2 carats in weight, while a gold ring can be 18 karats in purity. Knowing the difference makes it much easier to understand the true value of jewelry when buying or comparing pieces. 💍
