In the heart of Johari Bazaar, beneath painted facades, carved balconies and corridors shaped by centuries of craftsmanship, stands Maliram Puranmal Rawat; among the jewellery houses appointed to the city since Jaipur’s very origin.

The iconic Rawat family building remains deeply woven into the old city’s jewellery legacy. While the showrooms have since expanded beyond the walled city and far beyond Jaipur itself, much of the work still returns here; to these rooms, these windows, this light.

A necklace composed in the traditional kundan idiom, this piece is structured as a rising crescent of foil-backed polki diamonds, punctuated with coloured gemstones and finished with a graduated fringe of pearls and seed beads.

The varied cuts and tones of the stones create rhythm, leading the eye across the surface and downward through the fringe.

Its use of multiple sacred gemstones recalls the idea of 𝘕𝘢𝘷𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘯𝘢 or “nine gems,” long associated in the Indian tradition with the nine celestial influences. Together, they are understood to represent harmony, protection, prosperity, wisdom, and strength; placing such jewellery at the meeting point of adornment and cosmology.

In the course of sourcing and working with exceptional gemstones, each stone invites its own approach. While carving and engraving remain established techniques, there are moments where intervention is reconsidered in favour of preservation.

Here, the ruby has been treated in relief rather than incision. The motif is not cut into the surface, but allowed to rise from within; an approach that maintains the stone’s inherent colour, depth, and luminosity.

This technique draws from a Mughal lineage of gem working, now seldom practiced, sustained by a small circle of master artisans in Jaipur.
