In 1839,the last Dimasa Kachari King, Govind Chandra Hasnu had no Successor to Succeed him thereafter eventually after his death ,British Empire Annexed Cachar( Dimasa
Kachari Kingdom) under Pretext of Doctrine of Lapse. According to Urusula Graham Bower -before the advent of Dimasas in this land, Siemis described as "Black & Small" inhabited this area especially Hajaichak, ditokchera and adjoining areas. These siemis are believed to be trading deomoni-a precious beads with Ahoms for cloth materials. Deomoni was made from "gareo bamboos" by involving the use of fires. Their refusal to disclose this secret process is ascribed their persecution and destruction by the Dimasa Kachari kings who entered later in this land . It is believed that Dimasa Kachari King involved in mass slaughtering of Siemis that decimated their population leading to extinction of their race. The survivors of SIEMIS later intermarried with Zeme(Jeme) Nagas which entered to this land when they were drived by Angami Nagas. Thus leading to total extinction of Siemis race. GEOGRAPHY:

HAJONG LAKE; ABODE OF TURTLES

HAFLONG, Feb. 12: Hajong lake is situated in the Langting Mupa forest reserve of Dima Hasao district near Hajong village inhabitant by the dimasa people and is situated at a distance of around 80 kilometres north of district headquarter Haflong . This lake is known to be one of the only few rare natural tortoise habitats in Assam and is home to a few varieties of Hill Terrapins (a rare species). Besides being home to these beautiful species the Hajong lake area is also a natural habitat for various wildlife like The Hoolock Gibbon, Whistling Teal etc. The growth of population of the present around 500 terrapins or more are known to inhabit this area.

On reaching the lake one would wonder why the lake is still perfectly sheltering dozens of tortoise. The reason perhaps is the arduous marshland and thick jungles surrounding the lake and the giant trees and thick bushes teeming in the lake water made it physically very difficult to ferret these sluggish imperilled creatures especially in the summer.

However, a story which is more than a legend and the mythological belief among the villagers nearby to some extent also helping the animal, according to which once upon a time the Hajong was a prosperous village but one day when the villagers caught one old python living in the village underground and killed it for the meat, the sin of killing the python became a curse and the village on that night sank into a lake and those eating the meat became tortoises except one old virtuous woman who left the village as she was cautioned in her dream to leave the village as she did not eat the python meat who latter spread the news to other villages.

This credence of not killing innocent animals and the Hajong tortoises are not mere animals but human beings. This belief is still alive among the people living around the Hajong lake for which even today villagers nearby perform indigenous pujas by offering goats or chicken to “cajole” the jungle Gods to save villagers from any problems of Hajong.

Though the people remember the story but nowadays no one really cares about it threatening the existence of these rare creatures. People of the village inform that the things are not quite as same as in earlier days for to most of the present generation killing a tortoise means nothing and incidents of poachers coming from faraway villages to kill the animal is also quite common.

So every year on the bank of Hajong lake Tortoise Festival is organised. This festival aims to create awareness among the villagers surrounding villages of Hajong Lake about the safety of the endangered tortoise species available in the area.

The people should try to protect the place by upgrading it to a “tortoise sanctuary” which will definitely help in preservation of the place for study and research purpose without destabilising its existing ecology.

BJP led Govt. could not show majority in session led to its own Downfall after 3 months of its reign. And once again Victory for CONGRESS with CEM Mr.Debojeet Thaosen.

“I’M WORRIED AFTER BEING ELECTED AS THE CEM” -THAOSEN

HAFLONG, Feb. 13: After being elected as the 21st CEM of NCHAC and for the third term, Debojeet Thaosen was warmly received by the party associates and congratulated who were waiting in front of the Council and then they marched from NCH Autonomous Council to Rajiv Bhawan.

While talking to media person after being elected as the CEM, Thaosen said that “I’m a bit worried after being elected, as because the former CEM Niranjan Hojai has left the salary pending of NCHAC employees and rise the percentage of DA from 65 to 119, which makes the situation more worst compared to the past. It is obvious that we should rise the percentage of DA to the employees with the hiking price in the market, but at the same time we should look at the council financial strength”.

“I seriously think we should take the help of State Government in this matter and try to tackle the problems” Thaosen added.

When he was asked about the appointment issue, Thaosen said that according to the enquiry made by the Parliamentary Committee headed by Mihir Garlosa, many irregularities and illegalities appointments have been found; we will look into the matter. Such irregularities should not be happen, if we want to develop our district, job should be given on meritorious basis and the deserving and qualified candidate should be appointed.

Anil Raja, G. Secretary of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) congratulated Debojeet Thaosen for being elected as the CEM of NCHAC for the third time and criticising the law and order of the district Anil Raja said that the district administration is very weedy as they could not recovered Jibon Kemprai, brother of DCC Dima Hasao President, Mahendra Kemprai yet, who was kidnapped 27 January.

Reception ceremony was also held at Rajiv Bhawan where all the MAC of Congress were welcomed along with newly elected CEM.
