What does a judge actually look for when a whisky lands in front of them? đŸ„ƒ

We asked World Whiskies Awards judge Nick Crutchfield to talk us through what he’s looking for at the judging table, why he chooses to be part of the World Whiskies Awards, and why producers should consider putting their whisky forward.

It’s a chance to hear directly from someone on the other side of the judging table and get a little insight into what goes into the process.

If you’ve been thinking about entering this year, now is the time.

🌍 What makes the World Whiskies Awards different?

For us, it’s the people around the judging table.

Our judges bring different palates, perspectives and experiences from across the whisky world. That diversity matters. It means every whisky is discussed, challenged and considered from more than one point of view.

And there’s real scrutiny involved. Every entry is given the attention it deserves, with honest, objective judging at the heart of the process.

Because when we say we’re celebrating the world’s best whiskies, we take the responsibility of finding them seriously.

Think your whisky belongs in the conversation?

What can a World Whiskies Award mean for your business? 🏆

For Thomson Whisky New Zealand , recognition at the World Whiskies Awards has gone far beyond taking home a title.

After being named Best New Zealand Single Malt 2025 for their Quercus Alba Single Cask, the team says the recognition has helped strengthen their brand, build customer confidence and open doors to new retail and distributor opportunities.

But there’s another side to entering, too.

đŸ„ƒ Independent recognition from respected industry experts
🌏 The opportunity to put your whisky on a global stage
đŸ€ New conversations and connections
⭐ Validation for the work, passion and craftsmanship behind every bottle

Their advice to other whisky producers? Whether you’re an established distillery or an emerging brand, it’s an opportunity worth taking.

đŸ„ƒ What happens when you take the label, the reputation and the marketing out of the equation?

You’re left with the whisky.

For World Whiskies Awards judge Adrien Gasteclou, that’s an important part of what makes the competition so valuable.

With nearly a decade of experience at La Maison du Whisky, Adrien brings his own expertise to the judging table - alongside a panel made up of people with different backgrounds, careers and perspectives from across the world of whisky.

And when the tasting begins, every whisky is judged blind.

No brand story. No assumptions. Just what’s in the glass.

As Adrien puts it, it gives judges the chance to discover something new and judge each whisky for what it really is.

🔍 Swipe through to meet Adrien, hear what he values in the judging process, and find out what makes a whisky stay with him long after the tasting is over.

Think yours could be one of them?

🌍 Sometimes recognition can open doors you never expected.

For the team at , being named Distiller of the Year at the World Whiskies Awards was more than a moment to celebrate. It helped open new doors for the distillery and brought greater recognition to the work they are doing in Taiwan.

That’s the power of being recognised by your industry.

The Icons of Whisky celebrate the people, teams and places moving whisky forward, from those making it, to those building the brands, creating the experiences and bringing whisky to people around the world.

And as Kavalan’s experience shows, that recognition can travel far beyond awards night.

It all starts with an entry đŸ„ƒ
