Happy birthday to TaroWashimi
Taro Washimi completed this piece for Vinavast on his fifty-second birthday.
Happy birthday to Taro Washimi.
In Japanese, 素 is essence without ornament.
直 is unbent, unadorned.
In the craftsman’s world these two characters are often spoken before technique — if the heart is not sunao, even the most skillful hands leave only habit.
“Washimi’s feathers have always had a left and a right —
01 and 02, like the wind-cut on either side of flight.
素直 takes no side.
It is not missing one wing. It no longer needs to stand on one.
Open, whole, without leaning.”
This feather was not made to celebrate.
It reads more like a letter written on the day itself.
Fifty-two years of road —
from the studio and piano in Tachikawa,
to the people on Southeast Asian streets who fed a family with their hands,
then striking silver at night and supporting a household by day,
slowly turning Native American technique into a language of his own.
The rarest thing he carried was never reputation.
It was that he never let the heart bend.
In Washimi’s world a feather has never been only surface.
It is wind-cut. It is flight.
It is the force in nature that cannot be seen and can still be felt.
This time he did not stack a more elaborate story.
He placed only the two characters 素直:
candid, upright, unfeigned.
The same demand he has always made of a piece —
complete from every angle.
The same demand he has always made of a person —
connection, not performance.
